Rusty ? Any un-coated iron or steel will do that .  :thud Paint it before assembly.

The new one was painted (grey/silver) straight from the box ???

A quick addendum to this one.
Replaced the slave cylinder and pads.
Replaced the hoses and flexi's and added some stainless guides.
The kunifer hoses I bought from ebay were a bit long, but a delve in my dads garage revealed my grandfathers vintage brake swaging kit (probably unused for 30 years).
The most satisfying evening I've spent in ages making the hoses the right length.

When I replaced the other shoe, it was almost unused, I'd guess replaced this year or last, so still a bit of a mystery what happened.

Anyway, bled brakes and a quick test at the weekend, the brakes are working very well, much less effort than when I bought the Landy, though I've put Mintex shoes in (after checking the pins) to add a frisson of excitement to every journey!

Thanks to all who offered advice, on to the next job!
