Doubling up wipers.
« on: April 13, 2022, 07:52:12 PM »

Hi,

I believe WW2 4x4s, that I'm not allowed to identify here, had wiper motors mounted at the top of the windscreen (possibly vacuum powered ???)

The thought occasionally crosses my mind, that there may be times when you wish you had a second pair of wipers, just in case the main pair threw a wobbly ... or even just one.

So ... you have four wiper motors, two driving the original motors at the bottom of the screens, and the second pair driving extra wipers hung at the top of the screen.

WHY? Because you can! Obviously there is only room for one blade wiping one screen at a time .... but maybe, just maybe, you may find that .... No! Let's not bother!

Hi Smokey,

Yonks ago, I had a car with a single manual wiper, but he fell off and broke his arm.

Joking aside, I understood that wipers MUST be "mechanical" .... though I have owned pre-war cars that had wipers that COULD be operated manually (by turning a knob). Plod assured me that was NOT adequate.

My dad's Ford model Y had a vacuum operated wiper, it stopped when the engine was working hard going up hill.  He replaced it with an electric one from an Austin Ruby

You have to take into account when and where Jeep's were built, different rules.
