Title: They don't want our business ???
Post by: w3526602 on July 03, 2023, 09:42:47 AM
Hi,

Barbara was placing a grocery order, a few minutes ago, by telephone. All done and dusted, apart from paying.

Her credit card was refused because it was issued by a different supermarket. Not a problem, (other than having to rummage for her other cards, while in bed), but it could have been.

Questions ... can they do that? ... is it the thin edge of the wedge?

Hi Alan,

Thanks for prompt reply.

Maybe I should refuse deliveries in a foreign made van? And check the "sell by" date on delivered food, while the driver waits?

I thought most credit cards were backed by Mastercard or Visa these days?
So you are saying, for example, a Tesco credit card wasn't accepted in a Sainsburys store?

Craig.

A one-man protest won't get you very far ... just hungry.

A retailer cannot refuse a credit or debit card on the basis that it is issued by a competing retailer. If the card in question is either a Visa or MasterCard, then you must take it up with them. It would be anticompetitive to permit this to happen. If it is happening, you should complain to the card issuer who will take it up with Visa / MasterCard.

we have a tesco card (paid in full every month) to collect extra clubcard points and have never had a problem with it being accepted anywhere it is a mastercard when all said and done.

That was what I thought too.
I looked at Tesco and Sainsburys bank and both their credit cards have the Mastercard two circles logo on them so surely they will be accepted anywhere Mastercard is accepted.
