Title: Car trials , rallies , etc etc ,
Post by: rosinante on May 23, 2021, 02:17:35 PM
Right oh chaps , need your wisdom  , I own a 4x2 S2 , in the past have rtv' d  as these are for 4wd  entering is pointless , are there any other socially biased non damaging rallies , trials , events etc that a 2wd landy would be eligible for ?
Cheers

Judging by the amount of times I've driven off road at events with free wheeling hubs disengaged (having not realised!), I'd say you'd probably be quite capable at most general family events where its a basic drive and family day. As long as you can keep both rear wheels ion the ground and maintain momentum, you will be pleasantly surprised as to what is achievable.

I once proved that by driving a green lane in Surrey in a 1.6 Ford Sierra! Didn't do the car much good, but we made it!

This club always looks fun - https://heroevents.eu/events-schedule/

You would need to check eligibility but most entrants are 4x2's. (I have a 4x2 Series One 88 by the way)

I once (at the age of about 20) drove the Ox Drove , south of Salisbury in a Mk1 Escort.

Is it still driveable or have restrictions been imposed on it now?

Hi,

I once accompanied a convoy of Trucial Omen Scouts (TUS aka the Table Cloth soldiers) convoy inland from Dubai. I was driving a Bedford RL 4x4 truck, as were they.

At the first stop I asked them how come I was struggling over the soft sand, while they were just wafting past me?

They explained that they were running their tyres at 20psi, while we were still on the regulation 70psi. We dropped our tyres to 20psi too (RLs had an engine driven air compressor), and found that we could waft over the dunes ... in TWO wheel drive.

I understand that Ozzies used to drive everywhere in 4x2 Utes, with ground clearance being a critical factor. Do we have any "opposite footed" (anti-pedes -sp?) members on this forum who can advise?

The sport  "mud-plugging" still exists (I hope). The vehicles are little two-seater "specials", with the under-inflated tyres bolted to the rims, excessive axle articulation ... and a wife bouncing up and down on the passenger seat. All will be 4x2s. Can anybody suggest where to find a video of this hobby? I think DELLOW turned Ford 10s into such Specials, in the mid-1950s, but most will have been made at home.

I used to own a Citroen Dyane (in fact i had 2), they are an up market 2CV and I have driven it places where land rovers were getting stuck.  Sadly no photos though.

I suppose I could ask the Cornwall and Devon club to drive the next RTV in 2wd if any other series are still taking part ,a new rtv class perhaps , still compliant with ARC rules perhaps ?

4x2 is ok if you have the right tyres to begin with.

Going back a few decades I had GoodYear Wranglers fitted all round and oh what an ace tarmac tyre !!!

Anyway my wife and I went out exploring a few tracks around Bwlch and at the end of one which had big boulders blocking my way I tried turning around ... tried !
The ground had about an inch of semi mud / leaf slime and my wheels were slipping, no probs I thought so hopped out to disengage the FWHubs and found I'd left the spanner back home after tidying the wagon up. Doh !

Had my wife at the rear pushing whilst I tried to get drive and no chance ... then  ... a scream from the rear ... my wife was plastered in mud and slime or rather her new white jeans were  :agh

A two mile walk to a bus stop and a ride home with many bemused looks from fellow passengers sealed the ordeal

Moral of the story ---- always err on the side of caution ( which I thought I'd done, oh well )  :tiphat :RHD :-X

Oh yes by the way the jeans never ever washed clean after that lot

Brilliant! That’s what they were made for. 👍

A familiar tale. In my case it was a failed front stub shaft, but the exact same end result (I think her jeans were blue though)

Hi,

Thanks for that video.

Way back in the 1950s, those trials specials were based on early Ford Popular chassis, with transverse springs at each end, giving tremendous axle articulation. Some of you may have noticed that some cars had the dampers bolted near the middle of the axle ... also to permit abnormal articulation.

Watching that video, I was struck by the "agitation" displayed by most of the passengers ... I assume the public conveniences were at the top of the hill.  :whistle

It is amazing where a vehicle can get in 2wd with an experienced off tarmac driver at the wheel [and decent tyres]. I count myself as such having driven landrovers and tractors on the farm since well before my teens -- in fact my first accident was in the '63 12 seater when I was 9 years old and did not allow enough slowing down space going downhill on wet grass and clipped a gate post when the landrover could not quite make the slight turn required at the speed I was going. I had already tried the brakes and decided no brakes and attempt the gate was the better option.

Many years ago as the result of a silly bet I did a complete summer day greenlaning in the Peak District in 2WD with my S1 V8 trials motor.

Managed every lane [almost 30 in total] including both Chapel Gate and Roych Clough [did need a few tries on parts of the 2 mentioned lanes -- both since closed to vehicles].

However, I do not think a std. engine would have done it -- too heavy on the front end and too little power to accelerate quickly enough at the exact point required.

On the first section of the next competitive trial the rear halfshaft broke :agh

Hi GVO416,

Ref your incident with the tractor, some local "lads" were mucking about with a tractor, near where I used to live, in the Swansea Valley, way after their bed-time.

The tractor ran away down a slope, so most of the lads jumped off, leaving only the driver, who was so badly "squished" that he had to be identified by DNA.

The farmer, an ex-U-boat captain, was reported in the local press as making unsympathetic comments. Soon after, his barn burned down, along with the cows in it.

Discounting sympathy for the cows, that was scarcely an effective revenge ... I presume his insurance covered any financial loss.
