OT - windscreen fitters
« on: June 08, 2020, 10:12:39 PM »

I am restoring an Austin Somerset and it needs the windscreen fitted. I have a new seal, but it is just a straight length, which apparently you superglue the ends together and then fit. Although I can do this myself (I think!) it would be worth paying an expert to achieve a neat watertight seal. Has anyone any experience of using the big windscreen fitters (Autoglass etc) as to whether they are capable of fitting "classic" screens. ??? A young lad in a van probably wouldnt know where to start.

The fact that I live in the middle of nowhere doesnt help !

Its a few years ago now but I had some windows fitted in Autoglass Bangor by a older chap wo seemed good in my non expert view.
You could contact (you may be a member) The Automobile club of North Wales, perhaps they could advise having a lot of old members and old car

Try your local mobile plant glass fitter, they are quite skilled as they sometimes have to cut glass to size and they use seals on a roll and cut it to size.  He may have the skills to tackle your windscreen

Just as an aside you would have found one in Yorkshire

I think you will find the big boys (Autoglass etc) wont touch it, as their insurance only covers supply & fit . You need to look for a local fitter or as has been mentioned a plant fitter.

Perhaps a local North Wales company could advise like-
http://www.realcar.co.uk/
I wonder who they use for those very expensive cars?

Did any of the Automobile Club members get back to you, I notice the request :tiphat
