Replaced the headlamp rims from my 4 year old 9000 mile items made by Wipac. Not a top quality item.

Hi Vod80, can you tell us what tyres you fitted as they look the part, are they on 5'' rims? I'm looking to replace the Colway remoulds I've had for many years as I feel they are getting too old although the tread is still 8mm.

Cheers,
Dave.

Hi Dave, the rims are 5.5inch early LWB versions (272309 if I remember right, with less offset).

The tyres are Michelin XZL 4x4O/R - so far, so good 😁

Cheers, Tony

Chrome plate direct onto steel as it is much cheaper.

Originals are brass and to make sure the chrome sticks properly there is a confection of very thinly plated metals [Nickel & Tin possibly - but I may not be remembering 100% correctly], with a final plated layer being chromium.

Hi Tony thanks for the reply, I guess I'll have to make do with Deestones.

They make stainless steel ones now, what grade I don't know, but not a lot of difference in price to Chrome

Another MOT pass with a couple of advisories. Slight oil leak. Underseal mentioned again. And nearside hub slight play. Now I had a go at adjusting the wheel bearings at the front just before it went in. So will have another go, must not have tightened it enough.

Play in the swivel pin/Railco bush can often be mistaken for wheel bearings needing adjustment.

Try the Rock Test:

You'll need the help of an assistant.

Quote
With the front safely jacked up, then resting on axle stands...

You then grasp the wheel at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions and try and rock the wheel in and out.
There should be no detectable movement.
If there is, check the wheel bearings. They may be shot or just need adjusting.

Now have an assistant press and hold the brake pedal down.
Holding the wheel at the 12 and 6 o'clock position - can you detect in and out movement ?
If so, the the swivel pins need attention.
You may be able to remove a shim, but inspection of the top pin is called for. There could be scoring or signs of wear and over heating through lack of lubrication (with or without FWHs).

This will tell you if it is indeed the swivel pins or the wheel bearings, or both.
And, just how bad the wear is.

Hired the local garage lift, first 50miles covered, it makes tightening the spring hanger bolts and checking everything else very easy.

When I get it back from the mechanic I'll give it a go.
Whilst there for the mot he's putting in a new passenger side footwell and gasket on the transfer box and changing the oils whilst he's at it.

Finished fitting the last of the bolts holding the front panel in place.  Got the horn and the sidelight working.  Well chuffed

Been falling over a pile of gearboxes for weeks now. Stripped them all down, dumped the rubbish and have a huge pile of stuff for cleaning now.
For once, I've been organised and put an ID stamp on all the castings so that I can work out which bit belongs to what when I've finished cleaning them.
