LED Headlamp bulbs
« on: January 14, 2022, 03:52:15 PM »

I have asked this before on another thread where I read this link but now realise I was OT and did get the answers I wanted which was my fault :thud

Has anyone on here bought AND fitted these bulbs-
https://www.classiccarleds.co.uk/collections/headlight-led-bulbs/british-pre-focus
having seen this type before but read  they had poor cut off, I wonder what your thoughts are, I wanted to fit them to a 86" but still retain the original headlamps, wires dip swith etc but have good head lamps with much less load ???

Yes, I have them on my Series 3 but haven't tried them in the dark. They draw about  a couple of amps each on full beam.

They look like mini projector bulbs that presumably pretty much ignore the original lamp's lens and reflector. Be interesting to try them in a shell with a nicely "patinated" reflector. Would the tester be prepared to ignore what would normally be a fail, I wonder?

My headlights have a plain plastic lens and the reflector is patterned.

They don't sound like anything ever fitted as OE to a series! Or indeed anything that used BPF bulbs.

They're not. I'm fed up with candle like lights and wanted something better. The light assemblies and bowls are plastic.
Originality is not my concern.   I've got  Defender doors, a 2.5 petrol 90 engine and front disc brakes. Makes for better driving

In my restoration I plan to put H4 Halogen, It is not the latest LED technology, but it provides a good cut of light, enough lighting for me, and maintains the more or less correct appearance, also if I burn out a light bulb, I find it everywhere.

Another thing that one should check, is that good voltage reaches the light bulb. Many times this does not happen, due to bad connections, contact problems, etc...
This produces poor light.
And of course, proper headlight regulation, a good light pointing in the wrong direction is useless.
Greetings. :cheers

As you can read these LED seem to work with 6 volt so should be ok with a voltage drop.

Just wondering if you have tried them yet and did they work as said on the tin ???

Only tried them stationary in the driveway at night to see what they looked like. It's a brilliant white beam but I need to get the aim checked. It'll be probably winter time when it gets dark early before I try them.
They're 5000k from Paul Goff.

I second that.

Corrosion on the reflectors doesn't help a lot either.

I used electrical switch cleaner on the connectors. It shifts all the green crud. The headlight assemblies are Wipac Crystal.

LED headlamps and poor cutoff are a recipy for blinding oncoming traffic. Recommend doing the job properly and fitting dedicated complete headlamps with projector optics to match on dip beam at least. Powerful UK have a good range.
