OT- Windows 10
« on: July 15, 2022, 12:22:44 PM »

Just had a notification from Microshaft that they are stopping supporting 8.1 and that I should buy a new Windows11 PC :shakeinghead

Up to now I have stuck to 8.1 as I use ancient copies of Dreamweaver and Photoshop (when you didnt have to rent it) so I was unsure if they would work with Windows 10. Looks like I have no choice now. I see you can upgrade to 10 for free but without a "product key" so some things dont work :stars
Anyone done this?

Many thanks
Bruce

Your 8.1 will still work fine if you are not bothered about "support". AFAIK you should still be able to upgrade to W10 for free, see: https://www.zdnet.com/article/heres-how-you-can-still-get-a-free-windows-10-upgrade/

Yes I did several years ago...

What versions are you using ?

I'm using Dreamweaver 8 and PhotoShop 5.5 and 7.0

... and these will work in Windows 11  :first

You can get the product codes off the internet.
You have to install the apps manually.

I like these apps - there is far less bloat than the current versions and I know my way around them.

Actually, I'm typing this on my new super Mac.
I run Windows 11 on it using the Parallels Desktop emulator for which I'm happy to pay for  :first

Windows 10 is obsolete.

Very old PCs and laptops (say older than 5 years) can't run Windows 11.
There is a fix, but you have to mess with the BIOS - search the internet for it.

Now waiting for someone to post extolling the virtues of Linux ....

Or MacOS. I’m interested in the older versions of Photoshop, I wonder if these are still “available”. I don’t have enough requirement to spend a long time finding my way round the “bloat”, I can’t even spend the time necessary to learn how to find my way round my camera and for the same reason I don’t want to pay a monthly fee. I’m happy at the moment using the standard editing tools on my phone on the jpeg files but sometimes I feel I could do a better job with Photoshop on the RAW files.

What platform are you running and what versions of Photoshop ???

I couldn't easily get Photoshop 5.5 to run in the current MacOS hence my use of the Parallels emulator.

I have Photoshop CS2 and DreamweaverMX2004. Told you they were ancient, but work perfectly for the use I give them. I don't do enough now to justify shelling out £30 per month for one program.

I’m Apple all the way now, I have a Mac, an iPad and an iPhone. I haven’t purchased Photoshop because of the fees, if I were taking dozens of photos a month then I would certainly go for it but the sporadic bursts of photography that I do doesn’t warrant the outlay.

I use Linux. I am not familiar with these issues of which you speak.  :cheers
