Worth a try or snake oil?
« on: March 28, 2021, 05:13:07 PM »

I wonder if anyone has any experience with K Seal?
I have gone from driving 5 miles to and from work (200 tdi engine) to doing 50 / 80 miles a day. I seem to be loosing coolant, not at a massive rate, but perhaps a expansion tank every couple of days. I have replaced one hose, tightened some hose clips. There is a small amount of pressure in the system when stone cold, starting to suspect the head gasket, but it is running fine.

Thus the K Seal question, says they will refund if it fails.......anyone ever tried?
I realise that the answer is to have the head off......but it’s not convenient atm, and I need to see if using it every day is going to be the plan anyway (change of job).

Suspect it’s snake oil, but still tempted!

I've used it in the past.

It's very much NOT snake oil.

K-Seal

It is important to realise and appreciate this is NOT a Rad Weld type product.
K-Seal reacts with the antifreeze and at combustion temperatures forms a "glassy" resin that can seal cracks and breaches in the head gasket (within reason).

At around £12 a bottle you have nothing to lose.
Read and follow their instructions.

There is a current topic going about what to do with a cracked cylinder head.
That too maybe a candidate for K-Seal.

Word of warning...
Given the worldwide shortage of 200Tdi cylinder heads, I would strongly advise getting to the bottom of this before any long term damage sets in. Are you absolutely sure there are no leaks externally in the cooling system? If it is a head gasket and given that on a 200Tdi, its an easy job, I really would sort sooner rather than later. If not, it could end up costing you a head and possibly more. That rate of coolant loss is quite significant for a Tdi.

K Seal is great for sorting out minor radiator leaks etc, but if its anything significant causing the coolant loss, these additives make flushing out the cooling system at point of repair that much more difficult.

I've used it too with good results.
I have also used their other product, Cargo Seal-Up. I used that in a Rover V8 that got a bit warm and either cracked or dropped a liner. I had nothing to lose so drained all the coolant out, fresh water and the Seal-Up then top up with water and run up to temperature as instructed.
Drained, flushed and left for a few days to cure then flushed again and filled up with coolant.

After that it went on for another 25k miles before I sold it and it never used a drop of water again.

This is amazing stuff! Yesterday, I purchased a bottle, put it on the passenger seat, drove nearly 100 miles and lost no water at all. The results if you actually put it into the cooling system must be spectacular!!!

So still keeping a close eye on what is happening.

Yes - it works on the 'get it scared' principle.

I used it on my Focus when I got a heater matrix leak up under the dash and its been about 5 years now with no reoccurence. However the thermostat stuck open about 3 months later and wonder whether the two events are linked. Trouble is the Focus thermostat is sealed in a £70 housing and is a pain to get to. K seal definately does what it says on the can though.
