OT Synstrip
« on: October 26, 2019, 08:55:25 AM »

Sorry for tenuous LR link - product used on LRs. I realise many of you have used Synstrip for removing paint with great effect. I am wondering whether it can be used to strip varnish from a wooden table with the same good results.

Any advise appreciated.

Well I had a tin of Nitromors varnish remover a few years ago that stripped paint with no trouble,so I'm guessing it's all the same.

I think the difference is the removal of methylene chloride which is very nasty stuff but a very effective paint stripper.  Synstrip does work, old Nitromors did but current Nitromors doesn't really.  The distribution of Synstrip seems to be for the trade only.

Unfortunately its not all the same these days. "Modern" Nitromors wouldn't take the skin off a rice pudding.
Synstrip works well on wood. Just make sure you are in a well ventilated area and scrub it well down with plenty of water afterwards.

My local auto-paint shop sells it over the counter but yes, its not something you'll find in B&Q type shops any more. Its on Ebay though...  Note the spelling is SYNSTRYP. Manufacturer is a company called Star Chem.

Synstrip is excellent, it's proper old paint stripper, not the nanny state eu approved rubbish !
I last used it  when  stripping bits for the land rover, the only thing it failed on was whatever crazy stuff someone had used to paint the cappings.  I'd say it's perfect for your varnish off a table project, i wouldn't bother wasting money or time on any of the other so called paint strippers you can buy 'in the shops'.. ;)

Another thumbs up for Synstryp here.  I get/got mine off eBay.  The 5 litre tubs are fairly economical too but do a search for cheapest outlet.

When stripping wood, it is better to remove the stripper with white spirit rather than water.
