After 2 years the Panda camper is running  :-*

It's a bit rough and smokey, needs some more running time and I have an oil leak somewhere and a water dribble to fix.

There's now a chance it will make it to Cheddar.....

With significant help from two other lay nuts , removed diff , was under the illusion it was held in on studs ,nope 3/8 bsf bolts screwed thru from inside the casing , some were wired to prevent them undoing when the nuts were screwed  on to secure the diff , three were bent making removal v hard , had bought unf nuts and studs. Minor set back , the big one was that the spider in the diff was cracked in four places , hey Ho , replacement diff on its way , new bolts and correct nuts also on the way , as it's a 4x2 it's well and truly off road , will have ro rewire all the bolt heads which are already drilled ,not yet determined if removed bolt threads are useable , new bolts reqd .
Grrrr,
Chris

Played Tetris with under seat lockers. I bought two YRM aluminium lockers for under the LH seat. Both identical, but one fitted really well and one was a complete .... Proves that all seat boxes are not made the same... Used a lot of rivets! Good product though - I'd recommend it.

Stripped a swivel down to sort out a PO bodge and managed to get the broken drain plug stud out of the swivel. Discovered that all the swivel housing to axle bolts were loose. Somewhat bizarrely the nylocs used didn't touch the end of the thread. The PO had used a spring washer behind the heads of the bolts and another spring washer behind the nut.  :stars  :thud End result bolt too short and nyloc doing zilch.

Finally got the 300tdi fitted. Just got all the ancillaries and exhaust to fit  - need to work out siting of the intercooler and fan, air filer and pipes etc and then refit all the front panels. Had a bit of a fight with the stop solenoid - it had the anti theft three wire electronic gubbins that is fed from the immobiliser. I ended up chiselling it off to get at the solenoid  - I wish I’d realised before I fitted the engine!

Slightly OT... Discovered that not one, but two ball cocks in the attic water tanks were leaking this morning. Maybe the mains water pressure was up a bit.

At last I've found a use for a CB master cylinder repair kit! Managed to use the rubbers to rebuild the ball cock valves. Happy teddy - no more water out the overflows courtesy of Girling!

Rust! Well just a wee bit as it turns out, the rubber seals for the vents were perished so I removed one to see how easy it was as they had been glued in, the paint in the recess was flaky and rust was showing through but luckily only surface rust. When I first restored Daisy 25+ years ago the bulkhead was repaired then professionally blasted and primered so a wee bit 'o' rust was not unexpected, maybe they missed a bit.... A good clean up and several goes with the rust treatment then some primer, I'll leave it for a couple of days then dab on some bronze green, I've got new seals but I'll need to check if my tube of Tiger Seal is still usable or needing replaced.

Had a day out at Wythall transport museum. Parked up for a photo next to a series one with Midland transport livery.
It's mainly all buses and a some milk floats but still worth a visit in my opinion.

Fitted a 3.54 diff in the rear axle. 40mph revs now give 50mph so much better cruising and first gear is actually useable now.

Running 6.00s and a healthy 2.25 petrol so power is fine.

Maiden voyage just completed after a full rebuild. New chassis, bulkhead, wiring harness, doors, seats and brakes. Rebuilt axles, steering, springs, rear tub, seat box and wings. Engine and gearbox not touched. Finally got some space in my garage after 14 months...
Need to adjust the brakes, but other than that, all seems OK.

Its owner has parted with a lot of money for me to do this one and that was still very much at mate's rates. Been in the family for some time, so I can't see him evening thinking of selling it now. I'd be very upset with him if he did!

What was nice was just driving about today in a well sorted Series 88. I spend so long nursing rotten old bone shakers around with wandering steering, tired engines, chassis made of cheese etc, that it was just nice to drive one and actually enjoy it as it was intended.

Rather proud of that one if I'm honest. The brief was not to smarten it up, keep as much of the old bodywork as possible and rebuild it into a safe and reliable vehicle. Hopefully I've ticked those boxes.

I think that looks a perfect job. Sound and usable, but usable being the important word
