5.5 inch steel wheels - what different offsets were made?
« on: April 09, 2023, 07:25:04 PM »

Just picked up a set of Defender tubeless 5.5" rims from another forum member and briefly talked about offsets.

The tubeless rims have a high positive offset in comparison to most of the 'LWB' rims I'm used to (i.e. the tyre centreline is more tucked under the wings) and I'm aware that these changed over the years, so it got me thinking... how many different offsets of 5.5" rims have Land Rover offered over the years?

I have at least two other sets in storage, but can't access them at the moment to measure.

Ideally I'd like to identify the part number/model year 5.5" rim with the most negative offset measurement (ET"Xmm"). - i.e. the one with the deepest dish effect which moves the tyre centreline outboard.

For fear of brining up old forum ghosts I obviously won't be asking anything about 6.5j rims - that's been done to death.

Series 1 LWBs had the offset you describe (or at least our 55 has).  It increases the turning circle and is a real pain

Mark Rumsey was the club's Technical Officer.
You can read the text of his article in the Summer 2004 issue of Built 2 Last, P20-22.
Available in the members' section on the website.

In 5.5 inch rims that don't require tubes you have RRC503600.

Thanks all.

Alan - that link to the B2L article was particularly helpful. While I've seen the annotated diagram as shown above many times, I hadn't seen the accompanying text.

I'd always assumed that the difference in offset was due to the wheel centre being riveted in a different position on the rim - I hadn't appreciated that the rim itself was effectively reversed.

So from the article by Mr Rumsey, it seems that there's two main types of series 5.5" rims - those pre and post 1968/69, with the post '68/'69 rims having the lower offset figure (so the tyres most outbound in the arches). I certainly have a set of these in storage so will go and measure up.

Peter - interesting re: your Series 1 rims, I wonder how these would compare to late SIIA/SIII LWB rims.

In my wheel stock I think I have a set of FV738903,
They are the sort that require tubes and I think are 5 1/2" LWB but dont apear on the list above of offsets :stars

FV 738903 is the military part number, 569690 is the civilian part number for them

Slightly O/T but what is the going rate to sand blast wheels with many layers of paint, the prices I have been quoted locally if more than new wheels delivered from Paddocks when using the club discount :thud

I am fortunate to have a shot/sand blaster in the local village & he is very reasonably priced.

Hi,

It might be worth looking on Ebay for a set of LWB (or Range Rover) PART WORN tyres, in the hope that the vendor has not mentioned that they come with a set of rusty Weller 8-slot , or RR, steel wheels.

Remember to remove/refit the tyres over the narrow rim side.

PS, I WAXOYL my wheel wells and tyre rims .... helps thenslide on with just a couple of 600mm tyre irons.
