65 years old today - 1958 S2's
« on: April 14, 2023, 01:53:26 PM »

My two YAC factory registered S2's are 65 today. By dispatch date anyway, both went into dispatch on the same day, along with a few others, all mainly to do with the upcoming S2 launch event at Solihull.

Here is a pic of them.

Superb.

You should get Dr Who Peter Capaldi to do a photoshoot in front of them - he was born that day too. Just not such a good day for intergalactic dogs called Laika.

That's a really lovely pair!  :first

 :bday

Just as a matter of interest, what do other forum users consider the "birthday" of their vehicle?

My 88" was Built on 27th October 1959, Dispatched on the 30th October 1959 (to Henley's in North London), and First Registered on 21st November 1959.

So 3 dates to choose from.  My inclination is to go with the build date, but I have considered the FR date.

Its a shame that getting build and dispatch dates is not a no cost option....

Nothing wrong with a series one, having 2x 86" and in my view in some respects better than the 2 or 3,.............. but I may be on the wrong forum to say that :shakeinghead

Remarkable pair.
Could you remind us how you acquired them?

YAC 378 the 109, chassis 21, I tracked that down in 2006 after first seeing it advertised in 2004 but not realising how early it was,  I managed to track it down in Oxford with the help of Tom Pickford,  it had already been stripped down by this point as it was a complete rot box after having been by the coast between 61-81 then being left sat in a Welsh field between 86-03. Hopefully will be finished and on the road this year.

YAC 379 the 88 is chassis No1, the first numerical S2. Again I knew of this car but could never find much out about it,  other than a few whispers it was still about near the Gaydon area, years later we found out where it was after being spotted,  however the owner would not sell.  Years again later, by chance I had a tip off the owner was moving and it was now for sale,  so again I was lucky enough to get over and secure a deal on it in 2015. Unfortunately it was left outside for a number of years with no protection, so it is very rotten despite its straight looks.  Thankfully it is a matching numbers car, the plan is to have this recommissioned ready for the S2 70th in 5 years time (got a few other projects first)

Regards Build dates - no body actually knows the real build dates., the day it rolled of the line.  What Gaydon/LR quote you as your build date is actually the date it went into dispatch, which is when the car was ready to go to its customer, between coming off the line and it entering dispatch,  there were various process's the cars would have to go through,  inspection,  re work, testing etc hence the dispatch dates are all over the place, rather than being in an orderly sequence. The idea that LR would send cars back to front and pick random build slots is ridiculous, they had a hard enough job launching all the different chassis number sequnces they used.  I know my chassis no1 was built roughly 2 weeks before it Made it into dispatch, along with chassis No2 and 3, that didn't enter dispatch until 2 months later. However chassis 4, 6 and 9 went straight into dispatch on 2nd April 58. This is all based on my own theory which is based on unit details and dispatch mean dates I have gathered over the years.

I'd agree with that. Nowadays the date of build is reflected as the "ABS" date. That means "accepted by Sales". Therefore as the JLR sales departments are concerned, the build date we receive is when it went ABS. The only way of confirming when it actually came off the line would be to look at build card data - most of which is computer logged, but not for public consumption. As 58paul says, if it goes back for rework which is very common for all manufacturers, its still not ABS, so could end up with a completely different recorded build date to what actually happened.

Given how many vehicles JLR currently have in build waiting for components and therefore subject to rework, current build dates are looking at months of variation from when they went down the line.
