What did you do with your Series 2 in April ?

Let me know how you get on as I'll be very interested to hear.

I need to do some repairs to the bodywork on my series one, hole filling, corrosion repairs etc. I have a TIG welder but it is a DC only machine, not AC.
I have Ally welded with it by reversing the polarity, using very large Lanthanated tungstens and pushing the filler rod through the oxide layer you can see floating on top of the weld pool but, it isn't easy and not particularly tidy.
I have just ordered a big tub of aluminium welding flux for gas welding as I thought that might keep the oxide at bay for a short while. I was intending to use it just like gas welding but use the TIG torch as the heat source rather than an oxy-acetylene flame.

If your MIG experiments go well though, I may just invest in a roll of wire to give it a go.

Having sold one of my 2As to Matt from Salisbury at the weekend, I’ve been sorting out my multi car insurance with Footman James- saved £51 with the S2 club discount!

Can anyone recommend a good ARGON gas cylinder supplier that has no rental agreements?
My welding will be few and far between - I suppose I could buy disposables

SGS do rent free gas if this helps. Pay a deposit on the bottle still but if its sitting around you probably dont mind so much as the rent.

Wished my Land Rover happy 56th birthday today.
25th of April 1967 was apparently the day she left the assembly line. Had to wait a while before being dispatched though. I guess they had car transporting trucks in the 1960's? It wouldn't have been driven to the docks?

They definitely had car transporters. Think Ken Wheelwright's Rover transporter with all those Series 1s. A lot went to the docks by rail though (as they still do).

Made a small spares pack for a 2A going off to sunnier climes...
I see that Allmakes now do a red rotor arm... Looks identical to the ones from Distributor Doctor, but considerably cheaper.

That's fantastic. I wonder what sort of films Christina was making in Malta with it  :RHD

They only made one film.
It was called "A Twist of Sand" and the Wikipedia entry states the following...

A Twist of Sand is a 1968 British adventure film directed by Don Chaffey and starring Richard Johnson, Jeremy Kemp, Honor Blackman and Peter Vaughan based on the novel by Geoffrey Jenkins.

I have the DVD of the film but the Land Rover doesn't appear in it so assume it was just used by the crew as a transport vehicle. I'd like to think Honor Blackman got driven around in it as well.

The previous owner to me owned a large shipping company with a number of freight ships so I can only assume he found the Land Rover in Malta for sale after the film was finished and shipped it back to the UK. The Land Rover was built 25th of April 1967 and was first registered in the UK in October 1967 so she wasn't in Malta for long. Does explain why she has an F-plate rather than an E-plate that an April 67 vehicle should have.

Such a shame - Christina was clearly involved in very high-class movie making!

Used a pressure bleeder to change the brake fluid, after all the scare stories I've heard about them - it just worked!

Back end up in the air supported under the chassis, mud and muck removed from the chassis and then sprayed with wax, springs lubricated, brake pipes measured ready for making new ones.

My friendly welder dropped off the galv strip for the fron of my apron tonight.  he is going to have a go at welding the ally tomorrow

That's looking rather nice Peter. Having tried Ally welding, I can say it's an art. Good luck to him.

I got a message from my engine builder saying my 2 litre motor is now nearly 60 thou oversize. New pistons are on the way to them for final sizing and honing then the long rebuild can begin.

Yesterday actually. Took the Landy out the garage, it started first time again (smug I know). Checked the tyres and pumped the 205s up to 30psi. Across the Clyde to the post office to post customer orders then over to the BP garage for some 'super' E5 petrol to top up the six month old E10. The Landy has run okay on the E10 but I thought some E5 might help enliven the old petrol. Couple of shops for a few necessities then down the Clyde valley for lunch, only saw one chassic car on the Lanark road, an early 90s Jaguar saloon but the snobby buxxer didn't wave back.... Back via the motorway keeping up with the wagons, cruised nicely but noisy though madam reckoned it was quieter than previously maybe the higher tyre pressure helped.

Does the camshaft sprocket run agaist the outside of the timing chain?  :stars

Is there an intermediate shaft driving anything (oilpump?) on the middle sprocket?

Assuming it is the same as my 2-litre then the middle sprocket is the chain tensioner. That has a weak spring on it, a pawl mechanism and uses the oil pressure to apply the tension.
My tensioner was very stuck so the chain on the left of this photo is sagging under its own weight, it should not be like that!
