Body Wrapping?
« on: May 07, 2023, 02:51:48 PM »

I’ll probably have effigies made of me my many of the esteemed club membership for even saying these words but here goes. My S2a has been in etch primer for about a few years waiting for the opportunity to carry on with the painting job but life gets in the way. It would need some / most / all rubbing down again now anyway.

So I’m wondering if vinyl wrapping would be an option assuming I could find someone who can get the correct colours.

Has anyone brave enough to admit having it done and any idea what it might cost me ?

How would vinyl wrapping cope with a scratchy lane?

Honestly, it's yours to do as you like with it, at the end of the day it's not like you can't take it off and put it back the way it was, you wouldn't believe the things I did with mine... as an e.g. I had lights along the bottom of it, pulsing to the music on the radio.......

I haven’t had it done but it used to be pretty expensive (£750 ish for a Caterham 7?) Not sure how well it deals with poor paintwork (I.e. not silky smooth) either.

Read somewhere that a Range Rover (sorry) was seized and taken away because the body wrap was deemed likely to upset various people and religions with its colour. It was in London and was gold and black.

Well that sounds like extremely unlikely. Hardly a shortage of gold and black cars in London.

Hi Andy,
It`s now possible to apply a spray on liquid wrap. I watched an episode of Outback Car Hunters where they did this to a large American car. Here`s a description  -

Full Dip have created a peelable, spray-on elastic paint which is specially designed for cars, motorcycles and wheels. You can customise, protect and create multiple finishes. It comes in 400ml aerosols and 4L ready to use sprayable. It is easy to apply and the most efficient material on the market! It is at a very competitive price and most importantly if sprayed correctly cars painted with FullDip can peel the paint off without any problem after years of application.

It`s another option for you to consider.

PS. I quite like the idea of a patinated rust wrap  :bright-idea

Virtually all our early test Grenadiers were wrapped so we could then chop and change with different sponsors, events and so on. We used a quality wrap (it was not cheap...), but it has survived me driving them through all manner of conditions. I don't think we've actually cut through any wrap in normal off road driving, so in reality its the best solution for protecting existing paintwork - even if as in your case, you don't have any!

We still wrap Grenadiers. The only concern I might have is how much it will stick to primer. Its easily removable from nice fresh paintwork, but from primer, I'm not so sure...

I dunno about vinyl, I think I'd go with Raptor Coat;  https://raptorcoatings.com/

Just checked again, the post and now picture came listed by Central London Police.

Thanks for the replies chaps. It sounds ( as I suspected) that I need to make time and just get on with it  I’ve already got the paint and we did make a start with roof in limestone and from 200 yards it looks not too bad , but get closer and it well …doesn’t.
I think I might try and get a temporary tent thingy made up in the drive and have a go with my Aldi compressor and spray gun

All this reminds me of those funny wheel trims that used to continue to spin round even when the car came to a halt.. It was a WTF moment when I first encountered those "in the wild".. Old Kent Rd as I recall 😁

I made a paint booth with pvc and plastic sheet. You can see the frame here;

And doing the body parts;

Gotta say it worked great!
