Secrets of the supercars on Dave
« on: June 20, 2023, 08:30:58 AM »

Just watching this on Dave channel (Wednesday morning).
Looking at the new Defender.

Looks terrifying!  Cameras, radar, sonar etc and an ECU which really controls the driving after evaluating the situation.

Really not for me, even if I could afford one!!

2 1/2 years into owning mine. Lovely car, and even if you don’t like all the gadgets,  it’s a great car to drive. Let’s face it, most modern cars have gadgets and ecu’s. As an everyday car it’s great.

I’ll hold my hands up now and say the technology has saved me from an accident. I didn’t see a pedestrian dart out from between two parked cars, it did and it stopped itself. If I’d been in my Series 2a, they would probably be dead.

That's good to hear Gareth.  I guess I am just a bit of a technophobe. All of that technology and the reliability of it all, scares me and my bank balance.

^^^^ And so it should. I’d love one, but it would be very reckless of me. At my stage of life, I’d rather bash my bank balance with relaxing holidays. But each to their own……. :tiphat

Yes I see your point. I’ve had 2 x D3 and 1 D4 prior to this, and so far the running costs seem much lower. It’s only had one service so far, and that was much less than the D4 service. It’s also only needed every 2 years.

Whether I keep it beyond warranty is another issue! I’ve no idea what to replace it with, and whatever I choose the waiting lists are long.

Another thing is the proposed electrification within the next 7 years. No manufacturer will be spending any money developing new ic engines now, so my Defender probably has one of the cleanest and most developed diesel engines that there will ever be.

Hopefully they made the internals out of metal and not cheese! At least they put a dip stick back in!!

Keep us all posted with how you get on with it - good and bad.  I'm sure it will be of interest.
