Hi,

Fit smaller wheels in the middle, so they only make contact with the ground  when the other wheels have sunk a few inches into the mud.

 :whistle

Fit FWH on one axle, do you don't suffer from "wind-up" on hard surfaces.

A couple of chaps in the 1960's converted a S2 88" to 6x6 by adding an extra piece of chassis to the rear  with the extra axle. The transfer box was modified with an extra gear and output , thus having two. The standard one drove the first axle , the second drove the rearmost with the driveshaft having a centre joint mounted on the top of the first axle.  Rover Company actually got involved and so did Hardy Spicer . Both said the drive shaft angles would be too great when the two axles were on opposite  full bump and rebound.  I seen to remember they drove to Africa and had no trouble with the drive train in spite of the engineers misgivings.  I will see if I can find a picture.

Jim Gardner at LSL built a 6WD breakdown truck for his business a year or so ago. I remember seeing it come together at Jim’s, there was some quite nifty engineering for the third axle IIRC.

There is a Facebook group for "3 Axle Land Rovers - 6x6 and 6x4"
FB Link
which might help. There may be others, but I knew of this one.

I saw on the net details of how someone fitted a spare pinion to the back of the intermediate axle and drove the back axle from that.  I think even he conceded that the pinion mounting could be stronger.

I'm sure someone makes offset drives for specialist applications - I'm sure that the internet will reveal something.  Milner is a word that springs to mind.

I remember many years ago (like 50) reading about an African expedition with a powered trailer driven from the PTO (Yes I know all the ratios are wrong - which I'm sure is something those building the thing found out and dealt with.)

The yellow one at Heskin is Jim Gardner's,  Perkins powered, selectable 2, 4  (in various combinations) and 6 wheel drive.  It is a real beast.
