I have shifter lever numbers!
« on: August 15, 2020, 06:30:36 PM »

I cleaned my black shifter knob with WD-40 and a toothbrush today and the white painted numbers and the lines emerged!

Nice to see them again! But kind of gross just the same ...

Unfortunately just a week ago I cleaned mine and the very last bit of white paint disappeared...

Does anyone know if airfix enamel works?

Mine need a paint again. I'll be interested to know what paint will go on and stay on.

I reckon that paint used for painting plastic model kits would do  e.g. Humbrol.

I used an enamle paint pin on the cold start knob.

I was just cleaning it in order to paint the numbers, as well, when they appeared! They're not perfect so I should probably touch them up sometime. Usually I don't need a reminder of where to find the gears, though  (I only forgot once, during my last inspection, when I was too nervous and couldn't find Reverse and was trying to select 4th instead. I almost failed because my reverse light didn't work! :-[ The inspector patiently asked me to lift the clutch pedal and then we immediately saw that I was in the wrong gear ... )

Interestingly the instructions for an Avommeter multimeter suggest that as part of an overhaul of a meter the knobs should be remarked if necessary - to give it a smart appearance.  The technique they suggest is using cellulose paint and meths for cleaning, painting with a very fine brush.

Having read that I did a headlight knob the other day, digging out the letters with something similar to the probe the dentist sticks into the tooth you thought was sound, then painting with white paint from a tin I'd bought by mistake many years ago.  Wiped off the surplus when I'd finished and it looks good.
