... any news on this

I've been using private window as said above and works well
when I looked at add ons disabled I got this message-
"Are you sure you want to disable all add-ons and restart?"
and I was unsure if I might create other issues so just use private window

Grasp the bull by the horns ... disable the addons and the world around you won't collapse.

On my Firefox I just have Ghostery enabled.

This allows me, if I wish, to browse the Daily Mail website, but it blocks all the adverts and other *&%^$.

The various ad blockers I have something else protecting the computer.
And here's the thing, if you have multiple instances of adware and virus blockers active - it slows the whole computer down 
You may have some active and not realise it.
The built-in protection in Windows 10 is very good and you don't really need any extra virus/malware protection running.

My view has always been, if it ain't broke....     but yes it is but I can get around it
