I don't know where this picture was taken, or when, but the Australian writer of the blog I picked it up from made a comment that focussed my mind.

I’m not particularly interested in the engineer who designed the drainage system, but I’d love to have a discussion with the person who built the fence!

Of course, it might be an optical illusion, there might be a ground level change hidden by the fence and the water, but even so ....
