Greased the rear springs using motorcycle chain spray grease. Squeaks gone :first

Got some of the grease on my hands - it won't come off despite repeated washing! Serves me right for not wearing gloves :'(

Started re assembling the front axle but I tried to do it in a hurry. 3 stars if you can see what's wrong with the way I've assembled it...

Should there be some studs for the brake drum and wheel to fix to, like a hub?

Still wasn't happy with the choke operation as yes the choke flap was closing enough to easily start the engine  but when pushed in the flap wasn't fully open so, had madam pulling and pushing the choke whilst I watched what was happening at the carb end,  I noticed that the choke outer springy cable was stretching and compressing so the inner cable was only moving about half as much as it should... Took it all apart and the inner cable was stiff to move through the outer cable so, a good clean up and a smear of oil on the inner cable and it was so much easier to move. As a further thought entered my head, what about a new covering for the outer cable to stop the muck getting in,  :bright-idea  I had some 6mm 'heat shrink' and placed that on and shrunk it. Now the choke works perfectly, whether that is due to the clean up and lub or the new outer covering stiffening the outer cable and preventing the stretching, maybe a bit of both. :cheers

Door fitting and bulkhead manipulation!
Oh joy - the door vaguely fits on the driver's side - or will do with a bit of extra room - but the passenger side has too much space and a non perpendicular bulkhead. Managed to move the rear tub section (though it's just a cab) forward in the slotted holes, but despite adjustment that included loosening off the bulkhead bolts and applying a ratchet strap, the gaps are still too wide. At least I can get the door level.
Question - looks like the bottom bulkhead bolt that goes through the outrigger might need a bit of work. I'll be out again tomorrow with a big set square and a 34.75' piece of wood to st the gap, but am considering whether I'll have to take an angle grinder to take 3/8" off the rear lug of the bulkhead to allow the bulkhead to come rearwards a bit. (New Richards chassis, new second hand bulkhead). Is this a common ploy, should it seem to be necessary?

Well I may not have worded my question well but the problem was that I'd attached the stub axle forgetting to put the front halfshaft in first  :thud. Luckily I hadn't bent over the locking tabs so it was a quick enough job to undo the 6 bolts and shove it in but it would have been extremely annoying if I'd been a few minutes later in remembering.

On the subject of failing to do things...
I built up another 2A gearbox today and forgot to fit the 3rd / 4th Syncro. I stood and looked at on the bench for ages before I twigged... :doh

Still - after I took it all apart again and did the job properly, I managed to fit a new repair sleeve to the rear output flange. I also recovered the output shaft thread that somebody had damaged by removing the rear flange nut without removing the split pin.

Completed my first service ("6000miles")on the S2A. First one since my Stag 35 years ago.
Family, job, modern cars...
Most awkward bit - getting to a second bolt for topping up the steering relay.
Silliest bit - losing the bean can lid seal - GOK where that went. Ordered 2 more so it won't happen again.
Most pointless bit- carborundum-ing the points when I have another set worth less than a cup of coffee.
Most satisfying bits - not getting oil up my arm changing the filter, the condition of the swivels and starting first time, running sweetly.
Probably old hat to most of you, but a happy few days of second adolescence for me.

Greasing the front prop shaft, grease gun ran out before I'd done the sliding joint >:D tried popping some loose grease in the gun, didn't work >:D so need to go and get a new cartridge. Ah well, add it to the shopping list!

Fitted a replacement oil pressure sender on the ex 2.5na Diesel spin-on oil filter housing that replaced the original canister.
A tiny job but access was a lot easier while the oil-filter housing was off the vehicle.

I now have an oil pressure light that goes off...

Then a run-out locally to check all was well...

Repaired my tilt from when I drove under a 6 foot 4 car park barrier.



Just measured it and turns out the Land Rover is 6 foot 6!

Driven it. First time since last summer after it ate the gearbox. Pleased to say I had the silly grin within 5 minutes .
Had a slight issue with the gear lever which is documented in my post in Workshop Wisdom .

Still good to get out on the road again.

Somewhat OT but I fixed the trailer floor I "fixed" a month or so ago.... The floor of my 18 yo Ifor Williams trailer finally gave up the ghost after this pot-hole filling exercise, the treated ply now too deteriorated to cope with being unloaded with a mini-digger.... Having looked at the prices, I decided to make a floor myself from floor-boards, made the schoolboy error of failing to factor in expansion when wet.... it arched nicely on day 2.... Today I took out a board and trimmed 1/2 in off one side, still leaving it a "flush" fit at the edges. I've then anchored it to the underlying frame with some square topped "C" clamps. It might not last 50 years but it'll see me out...
