Cleaning the inside of the windscreen
« on: January 15, 2022, 05:14:20 PM »

I strugle to get the inside of the windscreen 100% clean, even worse on modern cars with a rake on the screen. I've tried so many things and to date white vinigar with paper towel seems best but as soon as the sun comes out :shakeinghead

What do you experts use ???

The same, white vinegar and paper towel – several paper towels in fact… I tried several products and methods, but this works best, in my experience…

Meths is good for cleaning glass.

I use a clean chammy leather wrung through with clean water. Seems to get the inside of the windscreen clean and smear free.

  Hi

Sudsy ammonia, which is hard to find its basically ammonia with a couple of drops of dish soap, mixed in a spray bottle, that and old fashioned diaper cloth, which you can still buy in bulk at a sewing store.

We use this at work to clean our aircraft windscreens, approved by boeing ect..

Seems to clean car windscreens pretty well too with very minimal/no residue.

Inside and outside I use ...

One of those microfibre cloths also help to "wipe" the glass.

There are proprietary glass cleaners, Sainsbury's and Tesco etc, do their own, based on vinegar.
Or you can take the ammonia based route.

One of those glass squeegees that window cleaners use is good for clearing a spray/liquid off the glass.

White wine vinegar and scrunched up newspaper, suggested to me by Laszlo the Hungarian truck driver many years ago.

One solution to reach into the bottom of a modern car windscreen is to wrap a microfibre cloth around the handle of a windscreen squeegee like so.
With this you can reach right into the bottom corners.

Reading this made me remember years ago of a neighbour who used newspaper for this job on his house windows and as I'm useing vinigar already :bright-idea

Years ago when you read the mewspaper your fingers were black from the print but perhaps not nowadays, was it the type of ink used in the past that cleaned the glass and modern print is no better than plain paper :stars

Yes, old newspaper had carbon ink printed on it. Not sure what they use these days, but it's different and probably no different to rubbing the screen with kitchen roll.

However, the vinegar is good and it what's used in many proprietary glass cleaners.

I’ve always used old newspapers to clean the house windows. Got that from my mum who got it from her mum. When in my teens, so early 80s, all my friend’s mums used that. The windows are always spotless. If there is a mark, just rub over it again with the semi soaked paper. One double page is good for one window, inside and out. I tried other things like microfibre or eben one of these steam cleaners, but none is as good as newspaper. I could imagine though, that it originated in frugality due to economic situation or lack of alternatives after the war?
My mum used spirit or vinegar, but I use glass cleaner from the supermarket.
I don’t clean the inside of my car windows that often, but when, about 1-2 times a year, i do it the same way.

Often times what our mums or grandmas knew and did is much more effective that the modern stuff. It’s just companies trying to tell us they have reinvented the wheel.

These are great, you don’t have to try to reach across to the passenger side, just spray a little cleaner on the pad.
I have a couple, for a Nicker each, you can’t go wrong.👌

We once had our cottage windows professionally washed.  That's alll these folks do is clean windows.  I noticed that they used water and squeegee, that's all.  I have been using water and squeegee ever since on the windscreens.  No worries.
