Was I bad in a previous life ?
« on: March 22, 2020, 06:13:32 PM »

Hi,

Well, now you mention it ... knock on the door this morning ... an Asian gentleman (accountant) from down the road bringing us a food parcel.  ??? It would have been churlish to refuse it ... but we don't need it...

What ever, Barbara gave him a healthy donation for his charity.  Mind you, we were grateful for the bog rolls his wife brought us last week.

All I need now is somebody who can tell me how to convert my lap-top to "land line". For days there has been "NO INTERNET SIGNAL", but today it just clicked into action.  ??? I suspect the bloke next door ... something to do with computers ... is drowning my poor little lap-top. He appears to be working from home.

Fingers crossed.

You probably need a network cable from router to laptop. A lot quicker.

Hi,

Some of you may have noticed my sporadic mailing.

I never know when my PC is going to throw a wobbly ... NO INTERNET SIGNAL.  Could this be due to the bloke next door working from home?
He's an IT specialist working for a major bank. His BMW has not moved for several weeks. ??? I've been incommunicardo  (sp?) for several, days. Today, did nothing different ... logged in straightaway ...crashed half an hour later ... back on line an hour after that. ???

Alan! You recently posted a link on how to sort the above problem. Would it be possible for you to snail-mail me a paper copy. Usual form of payment.

Hi K,

I've been asking if there is anyway of running my PC off BT's cables? "No answer!",  was the stern reply, which I took as an indication that "Thar ain't no sich naminal!"

Are you telling me there is?  Doh! Birthday today (81) ... I've had to make do with a prezzy of about 150kg of new wooden work-bench. SWMBO will be expecting to go out and assemble it.

Please tell me more about your aforementioned gismo ... price ... who ... where ... etc.

How far is your  laptop from your router (BT box with flashing lights)? You need a simple ethernet cable to run between the two. You will then be connected with no need for wi fi (wireless) connection.

Happy Birthday to you   :-*

There's no way your neighbour's Internet activities can impinge on your broadband/internet service - unless they are using your router password and "hi-jacking" your service. It is of course illegal.
I find this most unlikely, even if he does drive a BMW

We've gone over this ground many times. You have a persistent problem with your Internet access.

You could/should call in an "expert" to sort you out once and for all. Or, complain to BT.
You have a BT router box (which we established last time you posted the problem).
But who is your Broadband/Internet provider ?
Is it BT or another service like Virgin, Talk-Talk, Sky etc. ???

Broadband speed may well depend on just what service package you have with your provider.

One thing you can do is a Broadband speed test. Each provider has an online tester app.
Run some tests and take screen shots of the results.
You can use the screen shots to complain to your provider if the speed is way below what they advertise.

Some on here have advocated using a cable between your BT box and your laptop.
This eBay link shows the type of cable you need.
auction: #322216272146
 :-\ Buy this cable.
I've selected one 5m long.
If you need a longer cable there are plenty to choose from.

Tis a "messy" solution as you'll have a cable trailing round the house and plugged into the back of your laptop - can make things a bit more awkward - but hard wiring to the internet should mean you don't get a dropped connection.

OK
I suspect you have a dodgy laptop.
How old is your laptop ?
What make/model ?
The WiFi module inside could be flaky.
Manufacturers are upgrading the WiFi modules inside laptops all the time - you could be stuck with something old hat and very slow compared to today's offerings.
It is possible to upgrade the WiFi module in some laptops, but this is for an expert and you need the whereforeall to dismantle the laptop.

Get the cable and see how it goes with that .....

Good Afternoon All,

I used to have BT Broadband but being 5.5km from the exchange and the cable actually being 7.8km long we were down to 1.3Mb on a good day.

I dumped them last year and went for ee mobile using an external aerial - has been pretty good most of the time with up to 9 - 10Mb available.

Now everybody is at home......... service not so good at all. Don't ask me what I think about how we are dealing with COVID-19!

Regards

Richard

Having encountered similar dropped Internet when visiting my parents, the solution was to call their provider and get them to send a new router.  Much better connection and speeds, but be careful as the swines at the company changed my parents internet service without telling my folks.  I got it back to their old contract, but the new contract was a minimum of 18 months with various fees to break that contract early.  They are evil...  :stars

Just a thought if your neighbour is an IT specialist would he not give you some advice subject to self isolation of course
