Title: door hinges
Post by: Henrik on May 25, 2022, 11:59:23 AM
Hi,
I´m looking for new door hinges for a Series 2A 88¨ -67.
Found used once on ebay but no new, the only new I see is a stainless variant for a safari door (3 hinges).
Anybody know a source for new or fully refurbished once?
Thanks!  :o

Not too keen to change over to Defender hinges even if I understand that they fit.

You could rebuild your old hinges, you can buy the pins and balls etc to do this, not a hard job ???

Might be a good alternative, I have seen some repair kit.
Thanks!

Those look the same , except they lack the rebuildability of the originals, in that they are pretty much 1-piece.

At some point in the future I'll be needing a full set, "Hesperus" had been fitted with "Defender" style hinges so I've no old ones to repair/restore.

How far away from "worthwhile" is it for someone to reproduce copies ?  Does anyone already do it ?

Surely rear door hinges are only any use on one side, drivers side top possibly, and the longer ones are no use on a side door.
Side door top and bottom hinges are also different?
I’m not aware of anyone reproducing Series 11 hinges, but as already mentioned most can be refurbished with new pin and ball unless the cups are excessively worn.

 :bright-idea
If anyone was to reproduce the S11 hinges perhaps the front base plate on the top hinge could be extented in the casting to make a mounting position for S111 type mirrors?  :pot-of

or is this a idea to far for a Monday morning.........

This is land rovers way of fixing door mirrors to S2s, straight from the optional equipment section in the parts book.  Perhaps S3 mirrors could be fitted to the bracket.

Brackets 347704 and 347705 are readily available but I made my own before I realised that they existed

^^^ I've looked at these and the S111 mirrors wont fit on these as the hole spacing is wrong, shame :thud
although I did see this way of doing it in Llandudno a few weeks ago, perhaps a member?

Copy the brackets but adjust the hole spacing to your mirrors

I've seen that done before, but I think the problem is the passenger side mirror ends up too far forward so the view is blocked by the windscreen   ???

Can't beat the "Military Hinge" mod, in my opinion, but I might be biased   :neener

I like Robin's "military" hinge mod but I already had the arms and mirror heads so had to find another solution - the land rover style bracket works for me.

I had noticed that the example I had seen in Llandudno had a longer arm on the passenger side, and reading your post I now understand why :tiphat

Sorry, I don't have a stock of hinges to modify and sell.

The picture of multiple hinges was a special event, to coincide with a Leafers at t'Pit event a few years ago when I begged and borrowed hinges to modify, to swap at the event (for folk who had ordered them).

Folk normally send me their hinges for me to modify.

Saying that, with your location, if you want to try to find a set of hinges on UK ebay or from a member on here, and have them sent to me, I could modify them and send them to you.
Saves you posting yours to the UK, though that has been done more than once from the USA, and even from Australia!

Robin.

I did have my hinges modified by Robin but was having trouble clearing the garage sides, so I changed the hinges to Defender from Exmore as they have brought out these new all alloy security hinges which I have to say are the dogs *&%^$, so I've now got a set of Defender spring loaded mirrors on which are great as I can see down the side now.

I do still have the old hinges and mirrors so I can re-fit them at any time in the future.

Holds head down in shame. :shakeinghead

You used to be able to get spring loaded wing mirrors which would fit the "Military" hinge (though the hole needs to be enlarged), but I'm not sure they are still available.

Winguard springs to mind   ???

Thanks for letting me.  I might just do the eBay thing, I'm in no hurry, just keeping a lookout for them

My issue with mirrors, being LHD, is seeing both the cars to my right and the right rear corner of my 109 when backing up with the same hinge mounted mirror. I have noticed over the years most US 109's and quite a few 88's the offside rear corners have backed into something. :-\

I've probably commented on this subject before...anyway, I've driven mine for 20 years in England and it's LHD.  I've had Defender hinges and mirrors for all that time.  The mirrors give excellent visibility on both sides no matter both with the station-wagon roof or canvas.

The mirrors, of course, are the same as my RHD Defender, so i guess I am used to them

I would love to go back to the correct hinges; however the reduced rearward visibility would be a major concern.

This is exactly my position, I also have Defender hinges and mirrors :RHD

Think I managed to find new hinges from www.bespokenseries.com
60 euro a pair seems ok vs some of the ebay prices I seen.

Could you check that address please? 'bespoken' doesn't seem to exist, and 'bespoke series' (written as one word) brings up an invitation to create a new website.

Thread revival. Maybe a Q for Robin. Mirrors themsleves never get discussed.

I've got coiler mirrors on 347704  347705 mounts to my S2 hinges, and frankly in use they're unbeatable.
Always wanted Robin's milly hinges, simply because they look great. Yet never did find mirrors to come close to coiler jobbies.
Can't be much smaller than coiler-type, what does everybody use?

Defender door mirrors and top hinges on my Series 3.
Well, you did ask.

Personally I use standard arms and convex 7x5" mirrors with my hinges.

Never had a problem with the fittings, and the convex glass gives a good view.

Have to say period stuff with period mirrors looks 'right' which is why I ask.

When I looked, something like those were about all I was able to find. They don't grant the visibility of late mirrors. Next size up seems to be a massive leap to Dumbo-like, with no in-between. I was hoping others know something I don't. Mine spends a fair bit of time in loading-bays and around animals, people, often that means kids. A 109 turning-circle has people looking on in bewilderment as it is. If I short-change mirrors it might not end well. Thanks for your tip. Useful for others.

Noticed this at a show last year, I thought a great idea as you keep the S11 hinges and use S111 mirrors without expensive mounts
(They look like longer arms than standard)-

I think this idea has been talked about before on the forum and I think the conclusion was that the passenger side mirror couldn't be positioned so it gave a good view, with it being further forward, blocked by the screen and door frames.

Perhaps the longer arms help   ???

Defender mirrors can be moved closer to the door. The arms are adjustable.

Yes, the nearside did have a longer arm than standard

The real answer was solved by Land Rover with the Defender door hinges and a "modern" mirror but we S11 people want to keep the S11 hinges, just to be original (which I'm not saying is a bad thing) but the S11/Defender hinges and mirror set up does work well.

I have seen the "modern" mirror mounted rear of the S11 hinge just by putting the mounting bolts through the door top :agh

land rover made a bracket to fit the s3 style door mirrors onto series 2 style hinges. part numbers 347704 and 347705

Just be aware that ther are two types of mirror arms fitted to S111s. The early type fitted to a Z shape bracket fitted under the hinge and will also fit to S11s (Can be seen on post Stolen -2763 NG). A later very similar but larger arm bolted to the hinge as do the Defender ones. The two types are not interchangeable.

The other route has been done to death. Using parts 347704  347705 or homebrew. One piccy courtesy: Genocache of this parish.
Search  347704  347705 on here. I've gone this way, which is not great, yet 'real-world', not bettered.
