First time I've ever vapour blasted a gearbox, but pleased with it. I probably wouldn't bother for a run of the mill box, but this one was a special case.

It wasn't toay but the forum was down then I got busy...

Bought some tyres for the old bus. I told them not to balance them but it was part of the price. I think I could sell the lead and pay for half of the tyres!

bottom all done now I reckon. 1 flip over for the top rails, then springs and axles can be fitted.

99% of the bumps are parts of the galv I didn't flatten back, shows a lot more with black on, but its only a chassis anyway..thats my excuse.

used a semi gloss skip paint, really hard wearing, seen another land rover with the same paint so gave it a shot, pretty good stuff.
my first time ever spraying a top coat with an air compressor now

does anyone know if the original paint was semi gloss or gloss? got me curious ???

I'm laid up with a bad back at the moment, but it has at least allowed me to tackle some of the atrocious paintwork on my 64. The previous owner had painted without priming it first, then watched as half of it peeled off when he jet washed the thing. I was just going to do the rear, but think I'll do the whole tub if my back will permit. Looks great in gleaming metal, but Halfords' primer will soon put paid to that...

The bare metal look does look pretty good.
Make sure you use a proper aluminium etch primer for aluminium.  :cheers

Is the Halfords stuff no good Craig? I must admit, I've always used that - easily the best I've tried.

If it is the standard Halfords acrylic grey primer, I think it isn't really suitable for aluminium.
Aluminium primers normally have some kind of acid in them that etches into the oxide layer on the aluminium allowing the paint to stick better.

The Upol stuff is very good. I have some of this lined up for my series one build.

When I rebuilt my IIA I used some surplus aircraft aluminium primer in a delightful green colour. It was in a tin so needed spray gun application but that did stick well.

Unless anyone else has different recommendations or more experience with painting than me, must admit, I've only done it once.

I've not got to paint any body panels recently, but I use this as a basic etch primer for pretty much everything.
Its available from multiple sources and is cheap and cheerful.

I have a 500ml tin of UPOL professional etch primer which I know I'll probably never use. If anybody wants it, its free to a good home, but I can't post it.

Thanks Craig. Funnily enough, I resorted to the Halfords after having problems with U-Pol! The Halfords etch primer does mention bare aluminium and I've had no difficulties across 3 trucks now, so will probably stick with it.

Hi Vod80, can you tell us what tyres you fitted as they look the part, are they on 5'' rims? I'm looking to replace the Colway remoulds I've had for many years as I feel they are getting too old although the tread is still 8mm.

Cheers,
Dave.
