Where will these finish? I say a conservative £1400+
auction: #274216541941
We'll know soon.
-
???
-
Those definitely won't sit at £800!
-
Currently £1070 with 10 hours left on the auction ...
-
I still don't understand why no one is making new replicas of these for a reasonable price. they'd make a killing.
In the meantime, I'll be keeping my wallet nailed firmly closed and rolling on my banded rims...

Why are these so sought after? ???
-
Because they are rare. Only fitted to a few Forward Controls and fire engines.
There’s a company in Germany making brand new ones but only in Carlos Fandango 8 inch width.
-
Because they are rare.
And because they look rad!
-
I just dont understand when strong Discovery 1 steel rims can be got at £5 each :thud
ok not the look but....
-
Wow.
Give me 272309s any day.
-
Finished at £2000 :stars :thud
-
Wow. If you want the real deal get those wallets open. But keep your wits about you.

Makes these brand new, TUV approved, tubeless wheels look like a bargain at £138 each.

If only they did them in 6.5" width.
:cheers

Could get a set Banded for that money and go on Holiday :RHD :RHD
-
Barbados isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. :neener
-
Odds are we will see them relisted. I doubt many of the higher bids are genuine.
-
Could get the Overlander wheels and have a wheel bander take an inch out and still save a bunch of money I guess. ???
-
Are these the wheels mentioned on another thread that when fitted as standard came with a steering damper due to the offset ???
-
Hard work getting the rims in a suitcase and you would be over your baggage allowance.

Get them narrowed first, they’ll take less room. :cool

It would be cheaper to get a set of LWB rims banded
-
I recently got a quote for a set of custom rims for my truck, those came in at ~£450 each.
If the same supplier could make rims like this, you could potentially get some brand spanking new ones for less than some scabby old ones.
-
And they could be run tubeless, I guess :cool

I still wonder if Discovery 1 wheels could have the centres removed and seriers centrers fitted and thesefore you would have tubles 7" rims that look series with the offst of your choise
I have seen lwb rims have the centres removed and rewelded inwards to give a tighter turning circle due to a bigger offset, this makes me think the above could be done :coffee

Any chance you could link us to a place that would band steel wheels?
couple of years ago I sold a set of these attatched to a forward control for £6k... does that mean the whole vehicle was worth just 4k?!

I have considered this too. I keep forgetting to measure the 2 rim centres to see if they are the same though! It would be easy enough to strip a set of LWB riveted rims and get the centre out. The Disco rims would have to be done slightly more carefully, grinding the welds out. Would be interesting to see if it is possible. I have a spare set of LWB and D1 rims.... :coffee

I also have the rims and was thinking about it, to get them true they need to be set up on a laythe pre welding and whilst I dont know could putting the Discovery rims on a laythe be a way to remove the centres cleanly ???
Heritage railways and quay workshops often have large laythes :bright-idea
Also are not SWB and LWB wheel centres the same but SWB wheels are cheaper ???
-
I wouldn't mind having a play around with the D1 outer/series nave plate idea. I've not got any D1 rims though, if someone fancies measuring the ID of the rim up I'd be interested to see what it is :)

As the D1 centres would effectively be scrap, you could just plasma cut them off then buff down the welds on the rim.
Wouldn't necessarily need a lathe to weld them up either, I made a jig up out of an old stub axle. As long as you can rotate the wheel and get a dial gauge on the rim, you can true them up.

We had tubeless rims banded 1.5" and the centres moved back. For a picture its the grey vehicle at the top in the topic linked below

I have a feeling the diameter of the D1 rims is greater than the series rims leaving a gap. I suspect this as the series is a J section whereas the D1 is a L section. L sections will fit over disc brake conversions such as the Zeus kit whereas the J section wheel will not.
