Title: Downloading my camera to lap-top. Advice needed.
Post by: w3526602 on May 12, 2021, 06:48:52 AM
Hi,

What it says on the label. I don't know what is relevant, so I will tell you everything.

My camera is FUJIFILM - 5X-ZOOM - HD MOVIE -14 MEGA PIXELS.

The "chip" thingy is a SAMSUNG - 4GB - measuring about 30mm x 22mm. Memory says it's called something like "SD?A", but don't trust my memory (I don't).

I have two lap-tops - a new HUAWEI, and an old ACER. Neither has a slot big enough to accept the the "chip".

"Somewhere" in the house, I should have a HUB, that will accept the "chip" thingy, plus several other USBs (?), but I haven't used it since we moved house.

I think that I need a remote hub, to be able to download my camera into the lap-top, but don't see that I have any need for more USB ports.

Is there such a thing as a single socket hub (adaptor?) to allow me to download my pictures onto my PC?

Words of one syllable, please.

602

PS ... while i'm here. Barbara called in an optician yesterday, to order new specs. While he was here, I asked him to test my eyes, as I'm not sure if I can read a number plate at 25 yards. The nice man says I don't need specs for driving. One less thing not to worry about.

Simplest way is with something like this (link below).... sounds like you already have one though. Simply plug into USB and it will accept many different media cards from cameras. Alternatively if you find the box that your camera came with it may have a cable to connect the camera direct to the computer

Multi Memory Card Reader (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Memory-Reader-BENFEI-USB-C-Adapter/dp/B08P517NW5/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?dchild=1&hvadid=79852131238471&hvbmt=bp&hvdev=c&hvqmt=p&keywords=sd+card+micro+adapter&qid=1620799600&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyTEVCRVdWRk1aVVc3JmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNTEzNTUyMkMxRUtJMDU3RkVZJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA4ODQ4NzczMkJMMFVSTUc2WTg1JndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==)

best of luck!

Thanks

Hi Giles,

Thanks for that. I will go away and digest.

My desktop (many years ago) had a port to take the wide "card", but my  lap-tops don't.

I had something similar to what you suggest, but "par for course", I can't find it. I will search a bit longer before spending money.

Strange things go missing in my house ... two vernier micrometers (300mm and 150mm), "Jack" saws (several), a large magnifying glass, a jewellers "eye glass" for removing splinters, etc. Some eventually re-appear, some don't. ???  Somethings I find in my other hand.  :thud

My Suzuki Jimny keys never re-appeared.  A metre long spirit level?

Can you plug the camera directly into the computer with a wire ( USB Lead )  ???

I offload photographs using an USB Lead and the " Card " stays inside the camera.

As soon as I connect the camera a pop up box appears which once clicked leads you through the process of transferrance  :tiphat

That's what I use. Just a cable with an ordinary USB at the computer end, and a small USB-ish plug on the other that goes into the camera. It is possible to install the software that came with the camera onto the computer, and then it will do all sorts of fancy tricks. But if I ignore that and having plugged in the cable and switched the camera to "view" rather than "take pictures" then go to file manager C-drive it just displays a list of all the pictures in the camera, complete with thumbnails.
Then I can just drag all/any I want to the required destination on the computer.

When I'm satisfied that it has copied all the pictures I want, I can then, and only then, delete all the pictures in the camera and start again.

I don't know the proper name for the camera socket type, but the cable is commonplace - lots of different gadgets seem to use the same one. I've several including I think one that came with the camera. I think the Satnav uses the same for downloading maps?

Is this your camera (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fujifilm-FinePix-AX655-Megapixel-Refurbished/dp/B00LNLPUDM) ?

Windows 10 probably has the driver for that family of cameras anyway. But if you go to the Fujifilm website you'll be able to download the correct driver.

As for the cable - it looks like a USB A to USB C cable.

10 a penny - you (as you said) probably have a dozen in your house.
Search eBay if you can't find the cable.

Much better to use the cable to connect the camera to the PC.
Taking the card in and out is not the best idea.

(I have a WiFi feature on my camera - it takes for ever to set up the WiFi connection and the settings aren't remembered. - totally useless, unless someone has invented a hassel-free connection. Not an option you should bother with.)

I use the camera (12Mp) on my phone and images get transferred to my PC in seconds via email.

I hated using the cable to download photos from my camera to the computer.  So I found an app called (mysteriously enough)  PhotoTransferApp   :shakeinghead

It installs on my iPhone and the desktop half goes on my computer.  Then I run the app on my phone, and start the app on my computer and they "see" each other because my phone is automatically connected to my home WiFi when I come in the door.  The computer displays the photos waiting on my phone, and I just select the ones I want and click "Download".

Easy squeasy.

Just doing some googling, it looks like an uncommon 8 pin USB mini cable, rather than USB C, so just make sure to check before ordering. Both should be easily available from ebay etc.

Hi Both,

Looking at my camera, it  seems to call itself a FUGIFILM, but is a 5 x ZOOM, HD MOVIE, 14 megapixels.

There is FINEPIX AX stamped into the top, close to the ON/OFF button.

I can see no way of linking the camera to my laptop  (or anything) ... hang on ... there is a tiny "squashed D" socket on the OFF_SIDE (Right, when look from the back).

I have not seen the instruction booklet for many years.

Gone 08.30. Barbara is calling me for brekky. Builders are due soon.

Don't forget that if you log in to www.icloud.com then you have access to all your iPhone's photos, contacts, reminders, files etc.
Obviously only applies to iPhone users.

Hi Nanuq

"Obviously only applies to iPhone users."

Then presumably it doesn't apply to ME! I ventured into unknown territory yesterday, borrowed Barbara's phone to take some photos of my new drive. It took several attempts, returning to Barbara's "sick chair" after each attempt, for her to reset her phone. It's a different world out there in here.

Eventually, I used my camera to take some pics, so she could see what had been going on outside.

It then came to pass, that I had to take Wilkie to my daughter's house (about three miles), so my grandson could take him for his daily walk (and earn some pocket money .. £5 per "sortie").

On my return, I found Barbara had sneaked into my study indoor man cave, and had found my "one legged spider", for down-loading my camera to my lap-top., similar to devices already pictured on this thread. It appears to be called a MAXELL USB COMBO (last two words not easy to read, despite being in circa 16 point). It been several years and probably two house moves, since I last saw this device. I've forgotten how to use it.  ???

OK, it's obvious how to  plug it into my lap-top, and then insert the camera's memory "chip" thingy into this thingy. I will let you know how I get on ... assuming my PC survives my fumblings.

OT, but related by photos (I hope). Our builder has lifted the drive by several inches, outside our front door, so in theory, Barbara can now exit the house. I have been "advised" that SHE will be driving me into Whaddon, to collect my Freelander. This will be the first time since the day before Lock Down was introduced, that she will venture forth, which will include the transfer from her wheel-chair into her car. Probably best if we take a  traditional wheel chair with us. Watch this space! She'll be demanding to come to pub-meets, next.

OT2, I'll mention in it's correct thread too ... New clutch fitted to Freelander, plus removal of nasty noise from transmission ... a smidgen over £1,500. Barbara paid that too (again while I was out - I know my place), by credit card over the phone.

OT3. I recently mentioned that LV agreed a reduction in our insurance premiums, due to lock-down. Statement arrived, from a CC company (that we stopped using over a year ago) showing a debit of £35.  :stars

Investigation revealed that it was a DEBIT against a DEBIT, and therefore a CREDIT.  :stars

Problem. We don't have that card anymore. We requested this CC, as all other accounts are in Barbara's name, and if she "popped her clogs", I would be left without any plastic. In the event, Barbara is still with me, the card was never used, and I couldn't find a MK branch of that bank, so we zero'd the balance, and chopped the card. Doh! I'm guessing that £35 will just sit there. ???

For our foreign readers, and possibly some young UK readers, during the Great Depression, if a man died, his wife would grab his now redundant boots, and dash down to the local pawn shop, and borrow money against them, before the news spread. Becoming "deceased" became known as "popping your clogs".

I plugged my camera's thingy into the SDHC card holder slot, the plugged everything into my lap-top.

"No answer!" was the stern reply. Ziltch!

Unplug, and wait for another day. "LMF", as they say in the Militatry,

We're going over the same ground ...

From Monday you can have visitors or go visit people.

You need someone to show you what to do, how to transfer an image file from your camera to your computer.
AND produce a simple crib sheet - do it by numbers, along these lines:-

1) Take photos.
2) Plug card into reader.
3) Plug reader into PC.
4) Transfer image file.
5)

I can't help remotely - but you need to know which folder the image files get transferred to.

You need  to know how to view the images - there are aps built into the Windows 10 operating system, or you may want to open images with some sort of photo editing ap (Like PhotoShop or Gimp).

Once you've been taken through the process a couple of times and with your crib sheet transferring images becomes 2nd nature.

Transferring images from a phone camera could be easier.
You just select the image and email it to yourself.
You then open the email on your PC and decide where on the computer you want to save the photo.

Here's a tip for everyone.

I use a dot of red nail varnish (don't ask) on the USB connecting cable and the camera socket so you can more easily tell which way up the plug goes.
It's not so easy to tell which way the plug goes on these small sockets.

When I plug in my camera, a box comes up on the screen showing the folder where the camera images are.
From there you can transfer the images to a folder of your choice for latter view or photo editing.
Once the images are safely on your computer you can delete them off the camera.

Hi Alan,

That's what I did.

No I didn't .... I plugged the reader into PC, THEN, plugged the card into reader. Should that make any difference?

I assume my conversion to a WINDOWS 10 PC is irrelevent?

Don't bother answering, I'll experiment after brekky.

It's possible your computer won't like the memory card from the camera, for 100 arcane reasons.  I have a Canon digital camera and it's like that.  So I use the "CAMedia" software and plug the cable directly from the camera to the PC and voila, all the pictures are available to drag-n-drop off the camera onto my PC.

Perhaps the same is true of your FujiFilm HD Movie camera?  Here is a link to the FujiFilm software, you might try installing it on your PC then plug the camera straight into the PC and see if the software can "see" the photos on the Fuji?

It's been a long time - still no pictures on here ???

Your camera is quite old and obsolete, if you can't transfer images from it, put it up for sale on Gumtree,, consider a new camera.

There is John Lewis store in Milton Keynes and also a Jessops Photo store.
Either of these will be happy to demonstrate (reasonably) priced cameras and even show you how to down load images from them.
Take your laptop to the shop....

They will sort you out in no time.

Looking forward to seeing your garden and drive work on here.

Hi Alan,

Thanks for your interest. No, I still haven't downloaded any pics ... they are still sitting in the camera

No, I don't have a mobile phone I suffer from Fat Finger, and pig-ignorance.  Most of what I've been told so far means nothing to me, but thanks for trying.

Barbara's phone takes photos, which she can send to me, and I can access/save. But she still hasn't ventured out of the house since she was unable to lift her foot over the three-inch threshold, the down the same three inches plus another four inches, plus another four inches, on the day before lock-down started. I'll have to get her to "grid her lions", and give it a go (she is now 78). If we can manage that, the next move will be the drivers seat of her car.

New camera? Our builder has just told us his bill will be the wrong side of £8,000 ... and today I ordered a six-yard skip ... but not a grab-lorry. (My dinner is in Wilkie). It looks like I'm committed to loading a ton a day, for the next week.  I can scarcely walk, but I can still dig. Go figure!

My daughter will be visiting on Saturday afternoon. I'll try to get her to takes some pics, and send them to me. I will copy them to here. That I can manage ... I think.

Hmmm! This PC is on W10. My other lap-top is still on W7. I suppose it's worth a try. ???

Hi,

Just to bring a sub-plot into the equation ...

I recently converted to Windows 10, and still have a hang over.

Recently, I've been trying to accumulate data specific to S2s, and lay it out in an easily readable tabular fashion, for the benefit of my myself, and hopefully others.

Problem ... Windows 10 has scrapped it's own Windows Publisher (which I understood), and replaced it with Libra Office 7.1 (which I do not find to be intuitive for this little mind. I'm struggling to draw a line, and when I do, I need my calculator to position it.  :stars ) So I done a Google, to see if I could afford a CAD CD thingy. Probably! Does any body have an unwanted CAD3 ?

Next problem ... where do I insert  the CD into my lap-top? I can't find anywhere obvious.  ???

So I looked at my older, spare, CD. Not only did I find the slot, I also managed to eject the disc already in residence, which identified itself as relating to a CANNON PIXMA MG2500. My printer is a CANNON PIXMA MG2550S, which I suppose is close enough. (if it works, don't mend it.)

I was going to ask for a picture of your laptop  :stars

Name, make, model, might help us best advise you.

These days - new laptops tend NOT to have a CD reader - the world has moved on from CDs.

Coincidently, last week I bought an external CD reader off eBay for £18 - it plugs into a USB port  :first
(I have various Windows installation discs that I want or may need for my number 1 laptop.)

It's not good practice to leave CDs in the drive when you have done with them.

I'm not sure why you need a CAD drawing package to produce a simple table of Land Rover parts.

A spreadsheet program is much better suited for this task.
Microsoft Excel is the tool of choice  :first

However, if you don't want to pay for Excel (and Word) you can download "Open Office".
Free to download and use.
We have mentioned this in the past.

Any new device brings changes to how you do things.

Don't keep running yourself down, familiarity come with a little practice. Initially there is a bit of a learning curve (but there are now some very good tutorials on Youtube that walk you through every aspect of using a computer and software packages) but with practice you'll soon get the hang of it.

We've been talking about you getting pictures from your camera to the laptop for a long time now.

You need to get the correct cable, plug the camera in and try it.....

I've attached 2 simple Excel spreadsheet tables as examples.

You can easily manipulate the size of the cells/boxes to contain your text.
You can control the type/style of the cell borders, etc.

Click on the paperclips to see the tables.
One is in Excel format which your laptop should be able to open.

The other is an Excel table turned into an image (very easy to do).

Everything Alan said is good advice.  The "LibreOffice" you mentioned is a group of software programs that try to mimic everything the Microsoft Office stuff does, except it's free.  If you want to do Windows Publisher type stuff, look at the piece of LibreOffice called "Impress".  If you want to make tables and spreadsheets like Alan shows, use LibreOffice "Calc".

I'm having a thought here.  You have home wifi and you want to do photos.  You have a laptop on the wifi already and Barbara is on the same wifi.  So everything in your house can "talk" to everything else on wifi.

Would you be opposed to me sending you an older unneeded iPhone?  It doesn't need "registering" or anything else, just turn it on and take pictures.  Connect it to your home wifi the same as everything else is.

Then when you're ready to move photos, go here and download the program for your Windows10 laptop:

https://phototransferapp.com/ (https://phototransferapp.com/)

I will have the same program pre-installed on the iPhone for you.  Then turn on the program on the laptop and on the iPhone, and they will "See" each other on the wifi without using any cables or card readers or anything.  It will show a list of photos on the iPhone ready to transfer, you just click the ones you want,  click "download" and it puts them on the laptop.

I use this all the time, and have not plugged my phone/camera into the computer for years.  It's very very simple and it makes it possible to post things like this... my new grandbaby.

Hi Nanuq,

Sorry for delay in replying. My PC is all over the place. Or maybe it's me? I've never had a lesson in my life ... and I'm regarded as "unteachable."
(ask Wittsend).

Thankyou for your offer, and I'd be happy to accept ... subject to me covering the shipping (in cash, or maybe "kind"). Maybe Land Rover orientated magazines or books? Or books about how to set your own broken bones?  I assume that UK videos discs cannot be played on North American/Canadian video players.

I'm sure if we try hard enough, we can find a way around that problem.

HTH

602 (John)

PS, Would you, as an American, have been subject to "drafting" to Viet Nam? I spent the last two years in the British Air Force on an Australian Air Force Base, about 1000 miles from Viet Nam. Us Brits were not fighting in Viet Nam, but the Australians were. The new Australian Commanding Officer was due to fly in from Viet Nam. He never arrived ... believed shot down. I suspect our Bloodhound SAMs kept the enemy aircraft away

OT ... Barbara, my wife, recently asked why I had "all those medals". General Service Medal with Arabian Peninsular Clasp, and a Campaign Medal with the Malaysian Peninsular clasp ... both awarded for standing in the appropriate NAAFI  (PX?) queues. The Malaysian Prime Minister awarded us their PINGAT JASA medal ... and that's when the fighting really started. The UK Government did not want us to receive it, as it would have meant two medals for the same campaign. If it's free, I want it!  The UK Government eventually conceded.

Very OT. A British soldier turned up on parade, wearing a German IRON CROSS. All legit, it had been awarded to his grand father in WW1.

When I explained why I had "all those medals", Barbara screeched "YOU NEVER TOLD ME!"   No gratitude, that woman. I gave her two years living on Penang, and she still tells me I never take her anywhere.

Look -

The best way forward is for 602 to take his laptop and camera to a local computer shop.
They will be able to provide the correct connecting cable and demonstrate how to download images.
If he needs a cable or he may even decide on a new camera - the shop will be able to sort him out.

A phone camera may well work, but 602 still has to work our how to "connect" with the computer.
And then what to do when the images are on the computer.
It's not a question of being "unteachable" it's a question of being shown what to do.

He needs to be taken through the process, step by step.
Write down the steps:
1)
2)
3)
4)

... and go through it a few times.
It then should/will become 2nd nature.

This impasse has been going on for months now and is something that can be sorted in 1/2 an hour  :thud

I'm intrigued on that one. There are plenty of photos and images of people (normally children) proudly wearing family historic campaign medals at remembrance services which is fine and right in my view. Why would somebody be permitted to parade wearing somebody else's medals on military service? Irrespective of whether its German or British, these are surely honours awarded to somebody else? Are decendents permitted to wear such honours?

Hi Diffwhine,

Memory says I've already answered that, but just in case.

The British VC is (I think) made from the guns used during the Crimean War. It was the medal to be awarded to "all ranks", at Queen Victoria's insistence (Officers get crosses, other ranks get medal).  In theory, the VC should only be awarded in KIA situations. While I was out-East, an Ozzie sergeant was last seen attacking a Vietnam. machine-gun nest, armed only with only two empty beer bottles. He had the bad manners to walk out of the jungle when it was too late to cancel his VC.

Holders of the VC take precedence over Generals. Very often, newsreels of the Queen include a black army corporal in the background. Google Corporal Jones VC.

I understand that the entitlement to wear a  VC passes from father to son.

Medals awarded by other countries must be worn on the right breast ... as per my Pingat Jasa medal from the Malaysian Prime Minister. (There's posh!)

I suspect there was a bigger "fire fight" (British Vets v HMG), to persuade HMG to allow us to receive it, than any battle in the Far East. Nothing special, but it was mine ... and I wanted it.  (Now worth about £40 on Ebay). It can sit in my top drawer, along with my Uncle John's "Dead Man's Penny" (MIA France 1915), and my British Veterans lapel badge. Sad!

.... still waiting to see some pictures

Hi Alan,

I can get my photos onto the lap-top screen, but I can't remember how to lock them into My Pictures.

I never used to have any problems loading them into my desk-top PC, but that was several years, and two or three lap tops ago.

I visit my daughter every week-day, so my grandson can walk Wilkie (my knees hurt). I'm sure my daughter could sort me out, but she's a bank manager working from home ... she makes me a cup of coffee, then back to work, while I read a book. Saturdays, she visits us, ditto the coffee, blitz through the housework, then I take her home. I doubt that she ever relaxes.

Barbara has been wheel-chair bound since the day before lock-down started ... one gammy arm, two gammy legs. She has been out of the house twice, during lock-down, and that was only to check the Social Services aluminium ramp, straight out, straight in, too steep. And the same again, after our builder raised the level of the drive outside the front door, very gentle slope, so getting in and out of the front door is virtually seamless.  As yet, she has not tried transferring from her invalid buggy to her car. She has never even seen our side garden, and has never been out of the back door. We have no doubts about her ability to drive ... IF she can get into her car. (She hit 120+ round Silverstone, in a Ferrari, for her 70th birthday ... one usable arm ... but she could still walk then). She only ever had one professional lesson, (with BSM). Disabled driving test in South East London, 1971, in a rusty £50 Mini that she drove for the first time the previous day. Married for 56 years ... and I still wake up screaming.

I will try to get her to the next pub meeting... a target to aim for.

Hi,

Well, I've managed to download my camera to my lap-top ... let's hope I can remember how I got there.

I did a trial download to this forum, but "No answer" was the stern reply.

I think it said the image was too big.  :thud

Without any doubt your images will be too big.

They need to be run through a photo editing package/app/program.

I believe you said you were a fan of MS Paint.
This is still available in Windows 10, it's just hidden away.

These things are often easy peasy lemon squeezy for the young.
Why not have your Grandson have a look for you.

Again, a 1,2,3,4 list of actions on a crib sheet to reduce the image size is what you need.

Not sure if this helps, but as I believe you are using Windows 10 now, there is a simple image resize function in Windows 10.

Open the image in "Photos"
Click on the three dots at the top right of the screen
A drop down menu will show a "resize" option
Resize to M (Medium)
When saving, its best to name the file something different or it will overwrite the original image to the lower resolution.
Upload the renamed reduced file to the forum.

Hi,

Er ... I hadn't looked here recently, so missed all the comments. My thanks to all.

Alan, it was MS Publisher that I was familiar with, I have been using it for many years ... and now I can't ???  I see it is available to purchase ( I'm wary of the free offers, and if it comes in the form of a disc, I would not be able to load it.)

I read somewhere, very recently, that Windows 11 is "coming soon".

I'm off to bed now, but will come back in the morning.

Yes, Windows 11 will be rolled out at the end of this year.

If you have your updates switched it will happen automatically.
The upgrade roll out will be staggered to reduce load on the internet.
If your computer is relatively new it will take the (free) upgrade.
There is an app somewhere that will test your computer to see if an upgrade to Windows 11 is possible,

You should note that Microsoft have said that they will stop supporting Windows 10 in October 2025.

Windows 11 looks good, the desktop is looking more like an iMac than ever. You can see a convergence of the two OS's.

Hi Allan,

If the boffins could program computers in Australian, us Brits would only take a few minutes to become fluent.   :cheers

Our grandson shows no interest in anything technical ... or anything, really. Similarly our grand-daughter. Our daughter is the PC boffin in the family, but during lock-down, she scarcely gets a minute to herself, away from the telephone, during banking hours. I visit every weekday, hand Wilkie over to grandson, and settle down with a book. Daughter makes me a cup of coffee, and returns to the telephone.

Saturday, daughter visits us (taxi) makes us a mid-day meal, walks Wilkie, and I take her home. Daughter does not drive, and I'm reluctant to leave Barbara on her own for longer than necessary.

Sundays, Wilkie does not get a walk. as my knees tell me not to.

Hopefully both grand-kids will be getting jobs soon, Granddaughter already has an offer. Daughter retires in 2027.

We'll have to try getting Barbara into her car, sometime soon, or work out an alternative. What are her/our options?

Life is a blur.

Hi,

Try this link ... should take 3 minutes to read ... https://brisbanesurgeon.com.au/news/jeep-bottom

But back to previous comments about "medically required" ride comfort ... would parabolic suspension provide the required softness? Are parabolic springs available, that would give the standard ride height?

If challenged, (and somebody else was paying), I recon I could fit either Model T transverse spring suspension, or jaguar XJ IRS, at both ends of a Series, using a bog-standard Series chassis ... but I haven't counted how many points I would lose on the way. Hmmm! Suspension, steering, and axles ... probably too many. Doh! And anyway, it would be too tall for Barbara to climb into.

Hi,

In case anybody is wondering, I'd cobble up a couple of sub-frames, that would locate on the four spring hanger points at each end, then take it from there .... :stars

No need to modify the actual chassis, so keep the 8 points.

The problem comes when you don't want to raise the ride height. Not insurmountable, but starting to get complicated. File under "Back Burner".

I'm also thinking about a subframe that locates on the four engine/gear box brackets, to support an electric motor.

Does anybody have any ideas, or even knowledge, about a handbrake system that would bolt onto the front of the rear differential (Or even the front diff? ... though I'd prefer to use a 2WD front axle.

We can all dream ...

Hi,

I'm not sure why this just appeared on my screen. ??? Par for my course I suppose.

When I changed to W10, my Guru (actually a telephone man) told me that I had to have more characters in my user name, and in my circumstances, they would need to be numerals. It doesn't really matter, as I've forgotten how to log on using my old identity. I feel like the DVLC staff, who told Barbara (Contracts Manager) when she hired them a car, that they had never driven a car with power steering, nor an automatic gearbox. Easy to laugh ... once you've done it. (Barbara screeched when she climbed into a Ferrari, at Silverdtone, and couldn't find the gear shift. But settled down when her passenger explained how "paddle-shift" worked. 125mph in a strange car! I still wake up ... screaming.
