The S2 door hinges are their distinctive shape for a reason - as they allow the door to swing back against the wing if the stay is removed - hence the buffer rubbers and re-inforcement on some Military wings.  S3 hinges don't allow this - which may matter.  You're most likely to notice that S3 doors swing shut and S2 ones don't.  Undo the stay and a S3 door collides with the pillar - S2 don't.  There may be problems with the door stay - which is different for each model. (S3 slides are on the door)

My mirrors don't foul anything when the doors go right back against the wing.

So the question is: "Why would we want one or the other (or both)?"

We would want wing mirrors because they were original fitment up to late SIII, and originality matters - to some of us.

We would want door mirrors simply because they are more user-friendly.

Both is just cluttered.

Simple really ...

Door mirrors weren't invented until well into Series 2 production. They were after market accessories, that clamped to the A pillar guttering - made by the likes of Stadium.
Years later they become standard fitting on most cars/vehicles.

I like wing mirrors because they show the econoboxes that like to drive right beside me, down low in my blind spots and inaudible over the cacophony.

I don't like wing mirrors when I'm playing offroad, because they get twisted all around from the alder bushes and tree branches, then I have to find a kid to adjust them while I sit in the driver's seat and complain.  And THEN I have to buy the little doorslammer an ice cream, and one for myself too.   ;)
