Starter issue with 200TDI in 109
« on: August 10, 2019, 05:27:11 PM »

When I got back from Nevada a couple of weeks ago the next day my starter decided to act up, well down really. At first it would just clunk like low battery. So I put on the charger and in a couple of  hours it was reading full. Then the starter would just spin and not engage. I figured the solenoid had packed it in. So I set about pulling the starter. It wouldn't fit between the chassis rail and the ladder frame/oil pan. So here is my solution in my blog; https://poppageno.blogspot.com/2019/08/200tdi-starter-replacement-in-series.html

Good idea. Mine definitely won't go downwards in my 88" as the exhaust is in the way (Steve Parker system) so I have to remove the inlet manifold and take it upwards. It only just fits in one orientation but it's still the easiest solution for me.

Hi,

My S2TD had a home brewed (fitted by the PO) starter button (probably better suited to a screen washer). It took about 2 miles driving with a stuck button to destroy the pre-engage starter motor. …. in France.

An inertia starter would have disengaged the pinion as soon as the engine fired, and just muttered away to itself.

Our 200TDi Dormy has had similar issues in the past. The click but not turn over was eventually traced to a broken core in the wire from the ignition it would sometimes make contact. The spinning but not turning the engine also occasionally happens usually starts at the third attempt.

Quinton Hazell do a starter for the TDI now that is really small. It makes fitting it so easy. I was initially worried about durability, but its been on my 19J for a couple of years now and 20/25k miles and been perfect. Spins over just as fast as the standard TDI starter.

Hi,

Probably OT, but might interest somebody.

Way back when, I had a 1936 SS (now Jaguar) 1.5 litre convertible … cost me £8 … wish I had it now.

One day I switched the engine off … but the rev counter kept reading 1000RPM, with a buzzing noise from under the bonnet.

Investigation revealed that the engine was not running, but I'd lost my fan belt. The dynamo was still spinning … probably acting as a motor powered from the battery … and the rev counter was cable driven from the back of the dynamo.

So … it appears that dynamos "motor" at 1000RPM (subject to pulley diameter differences), but I have no idea what power they develop.
Does anybody have any ideas?

About the same as it could generate I would guess. For a 22A 12V dynamo, about 1/3 horsepower perhaps if suitably loaded.
