Managed to spray the radiator and cowl with satin black. Never thought It would of been warm enough to spray outside on new years day. 15 deg here in North Wales.

Went to collect most of a knackered 5mb diesel engine
Peter
how much was it out of curiosity, as i have half of a 5mb diesel engine sat around as well. been wondering if its worth taking apart for bits to go to other engines that survive.
-
It was free, going for scrap. I think the block will be past it as it has been outside with no head on but there was still oil in it. I dont really want it for myself but I have stripped a petrol engine before and passed the parts on. The only thing that is of use to me is a bracket on the injector pump but there are plenty of bits to pass on.

Drove down to the Forth and Clyde canal for a wee walk

I spent a nice afternoon painting components, in a T shirt on the first of January!🌞🌞🌞

I have been working on designing my wildly overcomplicated wiring loom from scratch. So far I have increased the number of wires going to the back of the vehicle from 4 to 23. 3 of those wires are spare but I think I need to add another 2 for a front roof mounted spotlight and for interior led strip lights that I have just seen on YouTube.
This is third draft, and I think there are more changes I want to make, including possibly finding a location for a fuse box at the back of the vehicle for the four 12V sockets so I can run a single higher current cable

Packing the detritus of the Xmas break :dancing_santas into the 88 (loaded above the tub).
In a few minutes will make the trip from Crinan back to Glasgow.
Kids back to school (and adults back to work) tomorrow :-\.
There are blizzard showers :snowflake coming in here in big windy squalls off the Sound of Jura, here by the harbour, so the top of "The Rest" might be interesting. Probably just rain by the time I get there :( ... but the wipers will get a good exercise :-*.
-
I got pasted by some snow showers on the A83. This was West of Inverary. The "Rest and be Thankful" was actually dry and sunny.
-
As a matter of interest is that the original Radnorshire registration from the early 1960's ? I once had a 1960 2 litre Diesel 88 with just an earlier registration.
-
As far as I am aware, yes. I don't have the original logbook but DVLC sent me some very faded photostats of the continuation logbook information in 1988. Your question has prompted me to get around to scanning them, and amazingly I can now re-read the information, and now it can't fade any more. I have the records going back to '77. As far as I can tell, it worked on farms/dairies (muddy ones, judging by the state of the chassis in 1988) in the Lampeter area until 1988, when I purchased it. According to the continuation logbook, its tax class was "Trailer Goods, Farmers".
-
I seem to remember mine was taxed Farmers Goods or similar , came from a farm near Bleddfa . and there were traces of Red diesel in the fuel filter! It had been part exchanged for another one at Local Land Rover Dealers ( Holloways ) here in Hereford . Remarkably the Salesman at the time now lives about 200 yards away from me.

Due to my son and his girlfriend, locking their keys, in her car, a trek across the fens , was undertaken with the spare keys, 130 mile round trip in WOA ,in , just over 4 hours, on the road, Boston, Wisbech, March, Chatteris, Wilburton, then back Chatteris, March, Wisbech, Boston,
first longish run since lockdown, causing delays all the way, diesel 2a

Went for a short drive to local tip to dispose of 8 x 5 litres old oil and some bits of rubbish . On arrival I had to honk my hooter to get them to open the height barrier and then when I started pouring the oil into the big tank They asked me “ Have you got seats in the back of that , cos you need a permit if not ? “ ( I have hardtop sides ) My answer “ No , but it’s registered as an historic vehicle , it’s not a commercial vehicle “. That cut no ice but then the second operative said “ They didn’t have seats as such , you just st on the flat box in the back “ . First guy takes a look and says “ ok “ . Then whilst I’m pouring he asks if it’s engine oil cos we’re not allowed to accept any thing else. Then as I’m pouring my last tin , operative number 2 says “ You’re only allowed to bring 5 litres at a time !
Anyway job done I went to father in laws to collect my newly delivered De-Luxe seats and new metal bases, I have questions but I’ll put them on workshop wisdom
Regards Andy

Well a item I came across that just screamed but me was fir a Wolsey but because it’s letter “W” is my first letter of last name it had to be and it one item which I needed that fitted into my steering wheel perfectly and just has that finishing touch .

A similar game with old tyres here. The local tip will not take them at all, the "main" one outside Stirling will only take 1 at a time. Not knowing this I turned up with half a dozen... Cue a conversation with the clip-board holder about the "eco" merits of me doing a 50-60 mile round trip 6 times to get rid of them... He took them in the end.

The less than glamourous side of slushy wet snow.... Feeding cattle again today with my patented "Bale Sledge", an old gate with an even older feed ring on top, "hinged" to the gate with some climbing rope. The sledge is towed out of the field, empty, I lift the feeder off, roll a bale onto the gate, drop the feed ring back over and tow it back into the field, stopping on the last "hard" bit before the lake-bed that is the actual field. Repeat every couple of days. The bottom of the slope is pretty mucky but so far I've avoided having to drive out into the field proper and churn it into a reconstruction of The Somme. Roll on the Spring.
-
The wiring diagram drawing continues. I currently have 61 wires going through the bulkhead to the dash, although I think 1 of them is a mistake and I can probably delete a few

We had fun pottering round in the snow. Gained the reputation as being 'hardcore' by managing to get the little one to her group horse riding lesson, which turned into a private one on one.....we are wondering if it was the Audi and Porsche products that couldn't cope, or their biological parts :RHD

Treated the Landie to a new battery to go with the starter motor, bought a Banner Bull 61048
Starts first time now without having to use the power pack!

Taxed the Panda camper online.
It really is an easy service to use. The reminder letter came today and it took all of 30 seconds to go through the screens :first
It does feel good when there's nil £s to pay :RHD

^^^Same thing with me ^^^ so simple

Feeling sad. Waved goodbye to the Landy as she made her way down the drive in the capable hands of our lovely local garage owner. She's only gone to get new tyres plus the odd tweak or two to keep her trundling along legally for me, but oh I really felt quite awful seeing her disappear. What is it about these faithful (often exasperating, awkward and time consuming but so much fun) friends that make them so very very special? :RHD

Deliver a couple of loads of logs to friends, filling the back of the land and my little trailer.
It does look out of place behind the landy though so a good excuse to look for a Sankey :-)
-
Rode to the rescue of my father's Freelander that I'd borrowed to collect some farm implements..... Mistakenly thought it would pull the trailer with the implements on into the field where I want them, but it instantly bogged itself with the trailer in the gateway - I couldn't even move it with the trailer unhitched!
Luckily my Landy was able to squeeze past the blockage, pull out the stuck Freelander, then back onto the trailer and pull that out through the mess the Freelander had left behind! Having the right tyres makes all the difference.....

For some unknown reason, I decided to rotate the distributor drive gear, so it was not 180 deg out. Then forgot to reinstall the oil filter!
-
Oh dear !
Memories of the Torry Canyon
:oil spill
-
Looks like the oil needed changing anyway!
-
Hi Eve,
Yes, although it was only done about 6 weeks ago, does indeed seem a to be dark,
-
Managed to install one of my new deluxe seats and feeling quite pleased. The other ( drivers ) side will be little more taxing due to the location of the existing bolts.
-
Got one rear chassis spring hanger bush out (using the burn and cut metho). Noticed the bracket on the chassis was angled slightly down (towards the outside). Maybe 2-3°. Another example of some suspect welding. Sigh.
Maybe this is normal?? ???
-
For the past few weeks just been moving it from inside the garage to the drive and back again daily ,drove it round the village today , nasty clunk from nearside spring , when Ihave finished fitting the kitchen will have to change the bush , hope it's the spring not the chassis one , any volunteers ?...

Drove to Hereford for evening out with a friend.
-
Not much..
I bought new u-clamps and nuts for my springs, and gave them a coat of paint. :coffee

Tonka in Rescue mode.... the mid-life crisis had a flat, 20 miles from home. Not the best news at gone 10pm...
:thud
-
Liz to the rescue?
I see the mid life crisis only has a polo mint as a spare. A good job it is going on the back
Peter

A trip out to Leaf Sprung Landys for our first NW meet of the year.
Thanks to Jim for hosting and Dave for organising, it brought some kind of normality to life.
It was also an opportunity to drive some different roads due to the closure of the M55. YOD reached a heady 70 mph on the M61

Liz was driving.... Yes, the "polo mint" is interesting as a concept. Packs very small in the boot, it needs inflated before it can be used, luckily Merc provide a natty pump...Looks to be the first time the tyre has been deployed in anger in the vehicles 26 year history ! - but as the tyres on the vehicle are bigger than the original standard fitment the "polo-mint" struggled to get traction, so the traction control kept kicking in, resulting in a drive home at about 20 mph. It works as a "get you home"...just. The current rear fitment is 245/35 R18, the "polo mint" is an R15 and I've seen wider bicycle tyres...
-
...which is why for my last few cars I buy a proper alloy wheel & tyre to match what's on the car.
(off eBay from one of the online scrappers)
It means I sacrifice a little boot space, but means I don't have to mess around with skinny run-flat spares with tubes of foam and compressors. I even remember to check the pressure every so often.

At least there was a spare. My wife’s new car just has a can of goo.
I try really hard not to think about it on long journeys :shakeinghead
-
Clean and change the oil for the air filter. Re set the gap of the points
-
Fitted a new battery terminal clamp, old one had snapped at the thinnest part so was a bit loose on the post, the Landy did start but sluggishly, now starts fine again.
Must get out more.... :RHD
-
I’ve not driven it for a few weeks, so I did a tip run.
No questions asked at the gate, - as usual.
Just a comment from a staff member: “Nice motor mate!”👌
- And yes, I did use ratchet straps for the journey.😁
-
Not in the Series, but I went to the Shepton Mallet Tractor Show today.
Looking at some of the tractors, I was reminded of those Series that have paint finishes better than new, wheels that don't look like they have even been driven on the road and immaculate engines.
Some gorgeous patina, there were a couple of oily rag restorations - which looked very good.
But the tool selection was useful!
-
finally finished the axles on my 1966 the other day, one red, one blue and now rolling
going to be a working vehicle, so odd colour paint and good beat up panels are what it will be having :RHD
next up are the brake lines
-
Another big Bale out to the cattle then a couple of hours "sorting out" the shed. The uninitiated would probably still suspect it was recently bombed.
-
Hi Gene, would you then like to do the same for my garage.... :cheers
Keep safe from the storm.

Checked oils and fluids, flushed and filled coolant, swapped fuel filter and put fresh diesel in, it has been stood for two years, then with my pulse pounding and hands shaking in trepidation I put the key in the ignition and it was the wrong key! A total Homer moment :thud so I shall try other keys in a few days then hopefully Uncle Fester will live again!
