Breakdown Recovery Renewals Again
« on: March 11, 2022, 09:19:09 AM »

Started a new topic as recommended, the previous discussion was getting a bit 'retro'
Anyway as per title, I've had Autoaid for the last year ( not called them out at all) and the £59 has on propsed renewal become  £76 and loose change.. I quizzed them about this and was told they've hiked the price for vehicles over 15 yrs old . ( i notice in the previous thread someone came across this too)
So wondering if there's any other bare bones cheapies out there ?
I know Start recovery do a 50ish quid one tho it's a 10 mile radius from home local only type thing ( that said I've not been venturing further than that recently anyway) their next level is back up to circa 75 quid too...
I'll doubless have a look online, but naturally there's the possibility of many not wanting to know about "old" vehicles  ???

..... so why don't you go for a classic car insurance policy which includes breakdown recovery in the package? There are several specialist insurers out there for classic cars which by definition are at least 40 years old.

Being a Series 2 Club member often means you can get a discount on the premium that is more than the annual subs to the club.
In other words, you can get your Land Rover insured with breakdown cover AND get S2C membership FREE  :first

A recovery company contacted the Club wanting to talk Discounts the other day, I've sent them details of the size of our membership etc....no response as yet.

At the moment I'm with the package that Adrian Flux can add, though its not as simple as ticking a box on the form, its effectively a completely different product.

I'm mid term in my regular insurance for the vehicle so cant really mess about with that now, you basically lose all the remaining  premium you've paid them if you cancel, I'll have a buzz round for inclusive policies next time tho, so good idea in principle 👍
For the time being I'm just looking for a cheap as poss thing so I'm at least covered basic fashion.

Try your bank account.

My account includes all sorts of extras. One is full AA recovery. When I asked if it included old Land Rovers, they checked and said yes.
Mind you, I've never had to call on them.

If you ever worked as a civil servant or local government (if only for a day, or a relative has/does) then you could join the CSMA and they are partners with Britannia Rescue and you get a discount with them.

I have cover that came with my Lloyds Bank account, and yes, no problem, with older Land Rovers S1 and 11, I've used it :first

I looked at Breakdown last year as my Greenflag cover has a age limit too.

I recall the AA (oddly) didnt have age limits and were entirely reasonable in price but now their cover is £139 for the national recovery for a sole driver.

I will be looking soon as mine is due on the road in 2 weeks so wil follow this thread.

Did  a price comparison; vehicle over 26 years old (it couldnt find my reg. vo.) national recovery RAC: £45 but £40 excess.  £65 with no excess.

AA cover through my Halifax bank account - worth checking what you get as mine covers home start (it’s not really aimed at us types - unless anyone here would admit to calling the AS to their house to get the vehicle started) but only recovery to nearest garage - I pay the difference to get recovery anywhere. Different ones will have other inclusions / exclusions

nationwide is a good deal, £13 p/m gets you UK and Europe AA cover and Travel insurance (£65 more per year for over 70).

https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/banking/best-packaged-bank-accounts/

no age restrictions that I can see on the policy.

As Coffeeblack says above, ive used Nationwide now for 10 years - only ever needed to call on their services once, but it was a superb service. A local garage arrived within 20 minutes, and I was on a transporter about 20 minutes later being recovered the 200 miles home.

In contrast, i was with the RAC when my gearbox went bang in Leominster once - despite being 50 miles from home, it was a 12 hour ordeal to get the vehicle recovered. Never again...

I'm with GEM Motoring assist, no vehicle age restrictions and on the two occasions I have needed them they have been spot on
