602's PROJECT ... legal question.
« on: June 28, 2020, 07:59:12 AM »

Hi,

Prompted by another discussion.

Our readers will be aware that I'm waiting delivery of a project Landy, with plans to do unmentionable things to it. You will probably also be aware that I collected a speeding endorsement in 1964 , when clocked at 80mph in my 1959 850cc Minivan, on the A1. At that time there was NO speed limit on the A1, but I was driving a GOODS vehicle, with a blanket speed limit of 40mph.

To be exempt from the 40 limit, I would have needed 4-wheel-drive, OR both rear windows AND seats. At that time, Purchase Tax was payable when converting a van into a car, but VAT rules have overtaken that.  VAT will already have been paid on both the original vehicle, and any parts added to it later.  (including seat belts).

So, just in case anybody else is driving a 4X2, you are limited to the goods vehicle speed limit, which I think is now 50mph (???) unless you have BOTH windows AND rear seats.

Not a problem ... now I've realised.
