Title: Pc help please
Post by: Kernowcam on October 15, 2019, 10:42:49 AM
My pc has decided to throw a wobble.
Was showing a message saying error re processing  with scared dots and bracket face?
Won't boot up and I believe saying drive not dectected.

Can't remember how to fix?

Do I need a spare cd to boot from or a plug in hdd?

Are we to assume you are running a Windows OS - Windows 7 or 10 or something else  ???

First, you could try starting up in safe mode.
As the machine starts up you need to press and hold one of the function keys down - could be F2 or F5 or F12 ???
Repairing the boot up into windows this way might be the least painless method.

If you have a CD drive (most OCs/laptops these days don't, to save space) then boot up from your installation disc and select the "repair" option.
But most PCs don't come with such a disc - you have to make one yourself.
You can still buy Windows 7 (and Windows 10) installation discs off eBay.

These days, as soon as you have installed your OS you should make a recovery "disc" and stick it on a USB memory stick and keep in a safe place.

Some might say stuff it and load up a Linux OS  :first

You may need access to another PC in order to create the media needed to recover your one.

Did you get any disks or bits with the PC?

Craig.

Yes ...

I hope you have any critical data backed up somewhere.
Of course if you haven't you'll have to take a punt.

In this day and age there are lots of back-up solutions, but we never do it  :thud
... and I'm as bad as everyone else.

:coffee hmm, yes...as I have just been setting up Linux Mint (updated version) on an old netbook that flies along using Linux.  I've been using Linux since about 1997.  Exclusively since about 2005.  Oh, one thing I do is make multiple backup copies onto different media.  Let's just say I learned my lesson a long time ago :/

What type of PC are we looking at here, is it a lap top or a desktop type machine?

It could well be worth fitting a new hard drive if it is complaining of storage problems. Drives are pretty cheap and easy to fit. You should be able to restore Windows to it, a fresh install then copy over any data from the old drive.
On the other hand, formatting the drive you have and doing a fresh install may sort things out as well.

Difficult things to diagnose over the internet, Do you know any computer people local that could have a look?

Craig.

I am suspicious of the hard drive. Can just about sort a transfer of data. Don't mind £30-40 as long as it's that. I used to be good but struggle now!

Any shops reccommeneded who give advice to buy from?

Went to my local pc shop, much intake of breath etc.
Had another go and I think managed to reload w10.
One problem was drive 1 not found etc. After many passes, I realised I have a drive 0 and no one! Switched it off trying to find and seems well for now.
