I know I’m getting a bit of a fossil but can you still buy Super Mud Plugga’s?

Blimey, that takes me back to the late 1980-s off roading with my dad in a series III. Drove all the way to Wiltshire with him, did two days of laning there then drove back again to Surrey. Think my hearing was permanently damaged by that journey and those tyres!

I can remember however everything that was on the sidewall of the tyre as I painted them in with a small brush and tyre wall white paint. They said Olympic PTS, Super-Mud-Plugga. A Google search reveals nothing of value now so assume they disappeared.

To be honest, they weren't that great. Okay, they were cheap but dreadful on the road, noisy as hell and very slippery in the wet. More modern tyres like the BF-Goodrich Mud terrain are as good off road and they are also non directional so you can rotate them once a year to even out the wear.

I ran around for years with Firestone SATs on my series 3. Tried the mud pluggas when the SATs became unobtainable but found them quite a lot less tall than the SATs. I'm now stocking up on 7.50R16 FEDIMA Maxima tyres for the 2a - they have the SAT/mud plugga tread pattern but they're tall, like the SATs used to be. The only problem is that supply isn't consistent so I guess they're made only when the factory has built up a stock of tall carcasses...

Let me know if you come across a set. I thought these would be easy to get. Seems I’m wrong.

Here is our photo with the mudplugga's fitted from back in the day with a very much younger me in the driving seat!

I'm sure I recognise the red wing series III from somewhere.

I had a set of Olympic, Super-Mud-Plugga's until recently on my 88 that were purchased back in the early 1990's, they were great tyres they got us through may off road sticky spots with a bit of an air down.

Never had any problems with them on tarmac even though the 88 is full to the brim with Larkspur radio equipment, the noise at 35-40mph was wonderful I even managed to get some horses in a field to bolt as I drove by because they were so loud!

If I could lay my hands on another set I would not hesitate to fit them again  :-*

  I think this is what you want, they seem to still be available a buddy put some on his 88 over here a few years ago and is happy with them.

According to CLR May 2016, Olympic Super Mud Pluggas went out of production in the 1990s.

That means that any NOS items could be over 20 years old  :agh

I suspect the "Free Shipping" may not apply when you plug "UK" into the shipping details....  :-X
