... and we worry about what a Series 2 can tow !
« on: June 07, 2022, 11:08:54 AM »

On its way home from the Strumpshaw Steam Rally this road train got pulled over.

Read the story HERE

Can he do this ?
I know showman's vehicles have different rules - but 5mph and how would that lot get round a roundabout ???

Most of the traction engines seem to travel on low-loaders to shows.

These council workers, off to work in desert country, probably travel  a bit faster.

The A47 seems to be where the action is.
Wasn’t that where the Land Rover was towing a shipping container?

It was, given that we don't have many main roads in Norfolk.

It was but a few years back that we only had 11 miles of dual carriageway  :thud

I can't see that he's doing anything wrong.
A heavy locomotive (diesel or steam) may tow three trailers.
A motor tractor, two trailers.
A motor car, one trailer.

In addition, any of the above if steam powered, may also tow a water cart.
And he's not overloaded. That engine could handle far more than that.

I think they were just narked because of his 5mph speed and the traffic queue behind hime.

I'm sure the driver knows what he's entitled to tow.

I just wonder how the rig gets round corners ???

It's not the roundabouts I'm worried about.  It's when he/she has to reverse it into the drive!  :stars

Hi,

Visulising a long rig, with somebody making a dash to overtake, not realising how long it is.

Do they still have long aircraft transporter trailers, with a seat and steering wheel in front of the trailer wheels?

I remember those aircraft trailers. They were called Queen Mary and made by Taskers Trailers near Andover. The Queen Mary trailers didn't have rear steering though. I worked there for a while in the late 1960's.

On police advice he unhitched the discovery and used it as an escort vehicle

(I suppose there was some debate about whether the disco could be classed as a trailer, the law about towing vehicles on an A frame other than for recovery is somewhat ambiguous)

I would struggle to find more than 11 miles of dual carriageway in Herefordshire too. The few we have are quite dangerous, because folk get excited !

Having driven trucks and tractors, and odd loads.

Drivers of large or slow moving vehicles pull over at regular intervals to allow amassed traffic to pass.

Weights and lengths apply when they are exceeded you require permissions and potentially police intervention (before not after).
