What did you do with your Series 2 last December ...

Some tourists decided to drive up to our neighbours. Found the gate, decided to turn round. Bogged in the soft ground beside the track.  Tried digging themselves out, probably just made it worse. Asked for help so I tried to Tirfor them out but unusually it was too much for the winch. Tried an angled pull round a tree but that wasn't working either. Went for the more Brute Strength & Ignorance approach, a 90 degree pull from the hard-standing of the track. Instant success.  Well Done Tonka
 :first

Best laugh - the gate was not locked, they could have driven into the farmyard to turn.

Tip run this morning. An old mattress fits nicely on the roof.

Did it make the run any quieter?    :snowman-1

Run round the lochs and glens of Argyll. Thought it might be a sunny ride, but it turned out very grey and wet. I really need a new battery. With the engine idling, dynamo cut out, and headights on, the voltage is down below 10V.

Happy Christmas all!
In Scotland there's a rumour that pouring a whisky into the battery rejuvenates it. The better the malt, the better the voltage. And once the bottle's been cracked it's a crime not to finish it!

A "fun" couple of hours or so underneath it removing the front prop flange off the trans box, plus the oil seal housing. Then the battering /digging out of the old leather oil seal of course.
The next stage can be tomorrow's game....

Just as well I got a speedy sleeve type thing, as the running surface is pretty rough and pitted, not surprised it was guffing oil out recently..

I was glad of my random selection of old Whitworth spanners too as 1/4 W was the only size that fitted the six nuts round the housing, otherwise it'd have been attacking a cheapo 13mm spanner with the angle grinder to open it up a bit..

Made a start with fitting my sound deadening kit. I soon realised that there will be some “ adjustments “ necessary to make some of it fit properly. Anyway I got the bit that goes on the floor ( passenger side ) under the mat fitted along with the bit that goes under the drivers seat. I also did the 5 pieces that stick underneath the bonnet lid.

Now it could be my imagination but I reckon it’s already a little bit quieter when I started up to drive back into the garage. I’ll try it with the decibel meter when I get a chance

Rain-sodden Argyll again ... Hunting for 19th century lead mines. Found none on the foreground side so far (might go back for another try another time), but a 5 hour wellie-thrash through the undergrowth on the other side of the glen revealed quite a few interesting adits/shafts etc. Approximate areas of success circled in yellow. I've got my dynamo regulator setting screw wound right up now, so the battery can still (just) maintain a decent charge while the headlights, wipers and fan are all on together. It sits just nice at 12.5-13 V with them all on just now, with engine revs above cut-in. If I turn them all off it would be way over 14.4 V. I'm becoming convinced that with the old dynamo and regulator you need to juggle the setting summer/winter to keep a modern battery happy.

Yesterday in fact, after a lot of sodding about replaced the front output seal housing and flange back on the trans box.. under the motor.
Unfortunately prior to this when attempting to fit the seal it would no way go fully home in the housing, ( without pretty much certainly destroying it anyway,) its a couple of mm ish shy
Now I figured I can get away with this, indeed it has been known for some to deliberately set a seal not fully home in order to run it on an undamaged section of shaft/whatever. I footered the speedy sleeve to be running fully in the seal to the best I can tell.
Doesn't seem to be chucking oil out when parked like it did, obviously proof of pudding will be after it's driven around a bit.
I gave up on fitting front prop as I was running out of daylight, and naturally it didn't want to go back in easily.. So, more wanton violence for another day if it ever stops raining..
