Hi,
I fell in love with Land Rovers circa 1953. I dived out of a school "crocodile", to run across the road to read the maker's name on the radiator ....
LANDROVER! Was it love or lust.
I drove my first Land Rover, just a few yards, in 1959, at RAF Weeton (No.8 School of Technical Training), and by 1960 I was driving them for real, at RAF Sharjah (Dubai), which is where I met my first S2 (promptly claimed by the CO). Returning to UK, I spent the next few years working mainly on Leyland Hippos (Google
RAF X-FLIGHT IMAGES which might find some pics, and a few lesser vehicles).
My last two years was spent on 33 Squadron (RAF), on RAAF Butterworth, with
sole responsibility (it says in my discharge book ... nobody told me) for about a dozen Lancer sideloading fork-trucks (equipped to handle Bloodhound Missiles), half a dozen clapped out Olive Drab S2 Land Rover diesels, a Bedford RL truck, the COs Standard Vanguard ... and one day a brand new Mini arrived.
I gave Barbara a bit over two years living on Penang Island, but she still says I never take her anywhere.
