GB stickers to be replaced by UK
« on: July 05, 2021, 09:03:59 AM »

According to the paper today,  the government has told the UN (who coordinate these things) that we are to change from GB stickers on our cars / number plates when travelling abroad to UK from September this year.

This is to make it clear that we include Northern Ireland as part of the country.

More pointless change just for the sake of it. Tokenism and jingoism in equal measure.

I don't expect the Gov't to do the change themselves, unless there is a lucrative contract looming for one of Johnson's mates
So mine will stay as they are

A retrospective requirement for all vehicles or just for new plates ?

If the former then that's an additional cost of £? per vehicle and an afternoon of faffing about that they failed to mention when describing the benefits of Brexit.

The article I read talked about displaying 'UK', then 'GB' in the next line, so who knows what the law will really be!

It should now, of course, be illegal to have the 'EU' stars displayed, as this would be confusing. For the number plates of modern cars, it is just a cheap sticker that is required so not a major issue. It is interesting that the 'UK' bit is to 'include' NI when it has just been ruled in court that the Government have broken both the Act of Union and the Good Friday Agreement (although it was deemed lawful as Parliament did it).

I wonder how much of an issue this will really be, and whether foreign police will care (apart from parts of France)? I have only ever taken my car which has no identifier on the number plates within the British Isles, and no-one cared in the Republic of Ireland nor the Channel Islands.

James May: "France is just a country you drive through to get to Italy" and "A bunch of lamb burning communists". Go through Belgium of the Netherlands instead (or go via Brittany).

A friend reports seeing a cop elsewhere in Europe peel the GB sticker off a truck then walk round to the cab to fine the driver....

...and poor Halfords, all that stock of stickers that will have to be binned.

You dont need to change anything. Just an additional "UK" sticker "somewhere on the vehicle" Less than £2 on ebay.
Back in the day the likes of the AA/RAC used to post you a free sticker when you informed them you were going abroad, maybe they still do?

Same at the ferry ports - they used to give you a free GB sticker (and headlight deflector masks) whilst you queued to get on board.

As I won't be travelling abroad I'm not bothered.  :cheers

Just wait a few more months of this govt, and the old GB sticker will be accurate again, unless Scotland scuppers that plan! :neener
