Woden 186/6S Vice Jaw Screw
« on: November 02, 2021, 10:51:02 AM »

My neighbour has given me a Woden 186/6S vice he no longer needs.

It is missing one of the jaw screws which are 5/16" BSF slotted countersunk by 3/4" long but with an unusual countersink taper. See attached photo.

I'm not having much luck finding one on the internet.

Does anybody know where I can get one please?

No I don't know, but I'd be sorely tempted to get a couple of normal 5/16 BSW countersunk screws, perhaps longer than 3/4", then put the threaded section in a battery drill and reprofile the head by holding the rotating head against a spinning grinding wheel.
The fact that the screw and the wheel are spinning makes it easier to get a consistant result, although there are no guarantees, that's why I suggested buying more than one screw :-)
The additional length is to enable a better grip by the drill chuck, the modified screw being shortened as required.

I'm presuming there isn't a lathe close to hand.

Regards.

Definitely BSF are they with 22 threads per inch?

Older record vices had similar screws like these...

I'd modify some normal countersunk screws in the lathe.

Thanks for the replies.
A 5/16" BSF screw screws in quite nicely so I think it must be a BSF thread rather than the BSC thread of the screws in the above link. The trouble is the countersink profile isn't right and the screw sits flush with the jaw whereas the proper screw sits below it.
I don't have metal turning kit or skills so I might have to wing it with the standard BSF screw.
The vice came to me with some wooden dowel hammered into the hole with the missing screw  :thud
