Title: What kind of spring is this?
Post by: dpmstevens on June 20, 2023, 06:32:16 PM
This mystery leaf spring came off the back of my 1966 109. The other side was fitted with an HD spring, so I've switched then both for new 8+2s.

I want to get rid of them, but this one's ID is mystery. Some people have said it's a from an 88" rear - but do they also fit 109s? I wondered if it was a 1-ton spring but it has 11 leaves, not nine.

This is a page out of an official landrover manual which I acquired with some other items - unhappily it is incomplete so no date or part number on it.

One oddity of this list is that both rear and front springs are shown to be sided.

Also the heavy duty springs with only 8 leaves are shown with a very low free camber -- i.e. almost flat.

Land Rover springs have their part numbers stamped here:-

You may need to do some wire brushing to bring them up.

I looked for the part numbers when I stripped and cleaned the springs - no sign, so they're either long gone or these are later, replacements without a stamped number.

That's really useful – thanks very much. Looks like all rear springs for all models are the same length, so theoretically you could put an 88" rear on a 109. I can use the leaf thickness data to check against these two.

This may or may not be of use.
