Interesting European Land Rover trip
« on: July 09, 2022, 04:05:20 PM »

Has anyone done an interesting 3-4 week European Land Rover trip and / or could recommend a route for same, with elements that are off the beaten track and ideally take in high ground?  Considering Northern Europe, Southern Europe and in-between but not UK and Ireland, except for setting off from the UK.

Chances are that this will be driven in a 110 Defender but it could possibly be done in a Series IIA (unlikely but at least that gives me the linkage to post the question on this forum...).

Get in contact with "Oddjob" on here, he's done a few lengthy trips.

Hi Kas,
Definitely take the Series. It's so much better  :first

Look at Team Faff on You Tube. We tend to copy their trips. We've been round the Nurburgring and then down the Alps to Monte Carlo and then last year we got the ferry to Spain, Drove over to the Barcelona end and then spent two weeks coming back along the Pyrennes.
You always get a warm reception in a Series and the views with the screen down are epic.

 :cheers

Our last Dormobile trip was to Denmark, then Sweden, across to Poland then back through (what was) East Germany , and the Low Countries and back to blighty

More accent on visiting the countries (went to a gig in Denmark and the shipyards in Gdansk where LEch Walesa started things, then east germany to see where my uncle was born) than off roading,
An excellent trip, 3 weeks and no more than 3 hours max driving per day, usually much less

New ‘Team Faff’ films on YouTube in recent days. Latest of several.

I would strongly recommend Albania and especially southern Albania. Some of the best off road driving in Europe and its untouched. Easy to get to - quickest way is on the ferry from Ancona to Durres. I'm supporting the BMW GS Trophy there last two weeks of August / first two weeks of September, so probably not at that time as it could get just a tad busy!

Thank you, I looked at their videos, some great ideas there.  Do you have a trip in the offing? Pre-covid I drove to Asturias in N. Spain in the Defender and numerous Irish trips but am planning to go further afield.

That's bang on - Greece via Albania was on my mind although the territory before that it was a bit hazy.  I'd got as far as Italy & Slovenia but a ferry from Italy to Albania makes perfect sense.  I will seek recommendations after your Aug/Sept trip.

By all means do. I'm doing it in a brand new 4x4 with air conditioning and all the toys, so a bit of a luxury. I lived in Albania around the time of the Kosovo conflict and ran about in an old Dutch Army Lightweight. Horrible vehicle, but we got to some great places. Have a look at the map - the southern area right round to Lake Ohrid is well worth a run round.

Take the 2A. You won't regret it!

No reason why it won't make it if it's in good order.  :cheers

I agree. You will also get a far more supportive local response if you do have a problem.

Nothing planned at the moment but I’m getting itchy feet!
I’m watching  the suggestions here closely though.

Tempting - I'd need a convoy, so maybe I'll get a someone along to drive IIA #2.

2 problems tough - 1) I can rig the back of the LWB Defender for a reasonable bed with the seats out, which I can't do with a IIA  2) a 300Tdi is an easier drive than a Series IIA 2.25l petrol for the distance
