At the risk of going even more OT, I think the Jetta was more of a ‘Golf with a boot’?

I agree. You could pick up a 16V Jetta for next to nothing second hand while the Golf cost a fortune. A bit like the Peugeot 205 GTI and the 309GTI

But we digress somewhat. I always tend to stop and see if I can help if I see a stranded Land Rover of any model on the side of the road doing a hungry crocodile impression (bonnet up).

Even more so if I'm driving a Grenadier...  :neener

Having been left pondering life sitting on the ARMCO more times than I care to remember after being let down by my "trusty steed", I can empathise with all Land Rover owners.

Back on topic ... Mark you are right and yes of course it goes without saying I'd stop for a Series Land Rover anytime without hesitation... even when driving my eurobox

Defender possibly ( though almost certainly ) not  :-X

Disco Freelander etc they may be trusty steeds but in the help " sliding scales " they'd be alongside a Micra

Grenadier .... never !! :shakeinghead

Coming from South Wales Geoff, that is entirely understandable!

I think because I actually enjoy driving old Land Rovers with intergalactic mileages, its probably my fault that I'm left stranded more times than I should. That's said, it has to be a pretty catastrophic failure to stop me progressing in a forward direction.

I have to agree - I tend to be more biased to classic (mid 1990s and earlier LRs). Trouble with stopping and helping some joker in a new Defender or Range Rover is that apart from helping change a wheel, there is not a lot anybody can do to help. That said, I stopped to help a new Range Rover owner near here recently who's 22" wheel had expired in a pothole I drive across without issue every day in my old P38. His jack was made of toffee and the wheel brace was evidently made of thick fog. because both failed. The bottle jack out of my 2A saved the day...

Some years ago I was taking my Son to school and passed an Audi A4 sliding on a muddy grass verge. I drove past in my Discovery, thinking serves her right.
Twenty minutes later on my return home, she was still there. This time the elderly Lollipop Man was trying to push her.
So I had to stop, more for his sake. Luckily the Audi had a tow hitch so I put the rope on there and proceeded to pull her out backwards. The Audi was sliding sideways.
I stopped and asked was the handbrake off. Oh' does it need to be !

Ha. Another time I came out of work and was flagged down by four lads in a BMW All Drive, belly down on the wet grass. Looking at the lads I was not surprised it sank.
All four wheels where spinning and I was a bit reluctant to try but it was late so agreed to give it a go. I was reversing into position when a friend of one of them appeared in a Defender.
Big wheels, winch, you know the type ? I was more than happy to leave him to it.

My apologies regarding confusing the Passat with other models. In my eyes it was always a more desirable car than the Golf, but as I said, no direct experience came my way, so perhaps that disqualifies me from holding a serious opinion.

Regards.

I'll help a Land Rover but nothing else. Is that "vehicle discrimination?" More than likely it could be a criminal offence in these crazy times.
The Ford is still there and nobody's come to deal with it. I can't report it as it's taxed and Mot'd. I won't let my curiosity get the better of me if and when anyone comes to deal with it.

It's gone. I watched while a successful this time jump start was carried out except they connected the jump leads to the dead battery first. I was always told to connect to the donor battery first and disconnect last.

Bikers always stop if they see a bike parked up on the side of the road - unless the rider is having a smoke or a leak.
We'd stop even for the small and learner stuff.
(Not so sure about scooters)

It's the riders' code ....

My wife has a Passat Estate for carrying all her PT kit around. We call it "The Fridge" because its a big silver box... OTOH its very comfortable, drives well and has all mod-cons. Not exactly exciting but hey ho. My latest toy, however....

Hang on, you can’t class a Passat with a Golf, boot or not.
The Passat is a larger beast altogether, often driven by the more mature, discerning owner. :RHD

As I remember the jetta was the booted version of the golf. just noticed I was beaten to it above.

Just a thought. I wonder if Grenadier drivers will stop to help stricken Land Rovers?
Probably not in South Wales?

Calum - you are stirring...!

To answer the question - in all likelihood, I'd say yes seeing as a vast proportion of Grenadier buyers seem to be former or existing LR owners. They can feel the pain...
