Sealing Galvafroid
« on: June 16, 2023, 03:19:48 PM »

I've been experimenting with Rustoleum's Galva-zinc spray and have just about worked out a method that works for me. Results on the rear tailgate capping below (still doing some minor touch-ups, in grey). Does anyone have views on how best to seal the effect in? On another thread, people suggested Owatrol, Osmo oil, regular satin lacquer spray, Autosol etc, all of which sound plausible, but some of which either seem ludicrously expensive or more suited to wood. Would appreciate any advice.

Such as Meguiars

Good for plain galvanised fittings ....

Ah, I've got some in the shed somewhere. Will it be ok with this kind of fake galv finish? Attached the before shot btw.

Looks good! I'd probably try Owatrol.

If anybody is looking for a cheaper solution, the ScrewFix No Nonsense Galvanising Spray is really quite good and better than a lot of the other offers on the market.

Thanks - which Owatrol btw? They all seem so different.

I would "paint" with Owatrol rust preventative  :first

Worth getting a can of this, as it has many uses around the Land Rover and is excellent in keeping rust at bay.
May seem expensive but a little goes a long way.

I have never sealed (brushed-on) Galvafroid.

Does it say that you should?

Cheers Exile - it was only because so many comments on various threads told me I had to deal it in that I thought I'd better check. Some detailed posts say that the galva spray isn't itself that strongly bonded.

Anywhere you have cleaned up, painted or left bear, such as a gearbox, inside of the front bumper, Swivel housings, the heads of nuts and bolts that you want to keep free of rust. Anywhere  really.

For example - here ...

Cheers Geoff. I was therefore wondering whether people used it on vulnerable bits of paintwork eg bulkhead hinges or was it not really a bodywork product?
