Brake shoes - do they tend to come as axle or wheel sets?
« on: February 26, 2020, 06:21:45 PM »

I’m trying to order new TRW shoes for the front brakes (GS6107, I believe, for 11” TLS brakes).

I can’t for the life of me find anyone (including the TRW site itself) that lists whether you get an axle set or wheel set for the money....

Anyone know? (I have messaged one ebay vendor but no joy yet).

They normally come in a box of 4 - an axle set.

They come as a set of four and should be replaced as a set of four - otherwise you'd get imbalanced braking ...

Hmmm. Ebay shop replied after I had placed the order and said that they’re a wheel set...

Due to arrive tomorrow, so I guess I’ll soon find out...

For example, if you have a leaking hub/brake cylinder which has contaminated the shoes on one side - the book says replace both sides.

Hi MWAD,

I assume you mean 4 shoes ... not four wheels. I've never met a box containing both pads and shoes.

My old (£2) Douglas 600cc motorcycle had only one front brake shoe, but it was big enough for two ... and I assume it flexed more than most. I wish I had it now ... I could kick-start it ... with one hand.

PS ... Overtaken by Porkscratching ... I think we are in agreement.

PPS ...  Ahem! ... I've been known to share the four "well washed" oily lining around all four wheels. But then ... my old jalopies seldom had brakes anyway. Pre-war Austin 7s used to have their axles "move" under braking, the harder you pressed the pedal, the harder the car let them off again. But in reverse, they felt like you'd run into a brick wall ... character building.

Hi,

Probably no need to say this, but 109s have bigger brake drums than 88s. ...

... but sometimes, POs have been known to fit 109 FRONT brakes to the front end of 88s

I suspect that fitting 109 brakes all-round on an 88 might cause some interesting "over-braking" at the rear end. It would maybe cause more pedal travel than is comfortable ... unless you fit the 109 master cylinder too. 109 front brakes are "twin leading shoe". Has anybody got round to converting 88 front brakes to TLS?  Feasible?

Rear drum brakes are always (?) SLS ... so that you have some sort of brakes when going backwards.

I don't think that's necessarily true. If one brake has been out of adjustment or has been sticking and has worn abnormally fast I fix the fault and then just replace the worn shoe.
Likewise a leading shoe surely wears faster than a trailing?

I've always done the same with pads too on other cars - I've got a collection of nearly unworn pads, and I pop one in if  they are wearing unevenly. I've never noticed any difference in braking, nor ever had MOT problems with imbalance.

The important thing is that the degree of wear should be approximately equal.

Yep, so we’ll find out today anyway!

I couldn’t find any non-ebay vendors selling TRWs - and an eBay shop presence doesn’t signify much in terms of the business behind it.

I hope it’s an axle set - but in my case, I could probably live with just two new shoes as the symptom of the heavy pull to one side seemed to go away when I mixed my shoes as an experiment. I know which are the good pair (and they don’t have much wear) so in theory, I could replace the single shoe in each front wheel from the dodgy set and still maintain balance.

Hoping it won’t be necessary though and I’ll be starting with four new shoes.

‘602 - my SWB is fitted with LWB brakes, front and rear - and with the appropriate rear cylinders (I did accidentally fit an inappropriate pair early on in ownership for a matter of hours/days, but the excessive rear braking was rather clear....). Aside from the split circuit (and built in servo - mine’s remote), I guess I’ve effectively got the post-‘81(ish) SWB setup.

Thanks for that Peter - should’ve asked here as they are slightly cheaper than the place I ordered from - and they do show four per set....
