New Defender Console Fabrication
« on: September 22, 2020, 09:10:54 AM »

Just had the New Defender delivered and I 'ucked' up !!! I failed to tick the 'middle console' box when ordering and now have a completely empty space in the middle !!! :stars I have just spoken to Land Rover and they have no retrofit - i.e. it can only be fitted on the production line..... Crazy. So to get round the problem I'm looking to find a company to build a bespoke middle console. Any suggestions on who to approach ?

Though my own experience I cannot answer the direct question, (although Mud Stuff springs to mind) but I can offer two comments.

Firstly, about the 'No retrofit - can only be fitted on the Production Line', I'm not familiar with what a 'Middle Console' comprises. If I was to guess it would be that 'No Middle Console' means more than just a single item missing, but that adjoining panels or mouldings are changed to compensate for the absence.
IE, this is more incorporated than a Cubby Box in the older Defender.

Secondly, photos of the area in your car, and views showing the Middle Console, perhaps from a showroom demonstrator or copied from a brochure, will be useful to explain to potential suppliers what the requirements are.
Such photos might also be interesting to us.

Regards.

OK, I couldn't resist looking for myself :-)
From a review I read :
"... there are two console options.
One is a traditional console while the other removes the console and integrates the controls in other areas.
A Defender 110 without a console and with bucket seats has space for a passenger to walk from the front to the back of the vehicle without any obstructions."

I have captured a screen shot from the accompanying video showing the centre console.
You describe a 'blank space' so this sounds like you have a 110 with a walk-through space in the centre.
The other screen capture appears to show a 90 with a middle console.

Regards.

Slightly off topic. In 1979 (I think) went to the motor show in Birmingham. On the LR stand was the brand new Stage 1 V8. The slick salesman was saying that it was the first time LR had fitted a V8 engine (in a Series vehicle). Asked him if there were any plans to fit the V8 in a swb. He replied "no, because it would be too powerful and easy to overturn".
When my mate told him he had successfully fitted a V8 in his 1952 80", the salesman looked horrified and warned him that he could well have voided his warranty :whistle

Continuing OT, LR did make some SWB Stage 1 V8s. Dunsfold have just finished restoring one. Apparently it was something to do with an overseas contract.

Continuing OTContinuing OT

The first V8 fitted to a landrover ever was done in the USA to a new 1966 SWB and used a buick spec. V8 acquired from an oldsmobile before Rover had got their version in the 2000 shape car into production.

There are some details here;-    http://www.westcoastbritish.com/naspecials7.htm

There used to be another load of articles from the face to face meeting at Solihull between Rover management and the actual vehicle plus its American owners but I cannot seem to get google to find them -- the article in the above link only mentions this meeting in passing with few details.

BTW -- wouldn't finding that one be a grand barn/hedge find :first
