Carpets any recommendations?
« on: February 05, 2022, 04:58:04 PM »

Sometime in the future I would like to fit some sound insulation, maybe the Noisekiller products and then some type of carpet set . I have seen the Cardura type sets on Paddocks website and wondered what people think of them , are they water resistant etc or is there a better alternative ?

I did wonder if the Wright Off Road set might be a better option despite its price especially when you think that the combined price of  a noiekiller set plus a Cardura set is over £300.

Any thoughts ?

Whatever you get ensure it wont hold water :shakeinghead

You do get used to the noise, its all part of the charm and in some ways part of the joy of a old Land Rover
I would avoid anything that hard to remove and replace as it becomes a pain when you service or repair

I got some of that stuff used for pitches/playgrounds, heavy but porous. Cuts down on the noise.

I use the bubble top matting used in stables. If it can support 1/2 tonne of horse, it can cope with my boots.
Easy to cut and cheap to buy. Different thicknesses - I think I usually go for 12mm

At my local car boot I managed to get some off cuts of Manchester airport luggage conveyor belts, Very thick and heavy, does not hold water and does the job :first

I'd go for rubber on the floor and Hardura on vertical surfaces & roof.  Hardura is a good thick vinyl top but either 1/4 in or 1/2 in of felt under that so I'd want to keep it away from standing in water ?

You can buy it "off the roll" from Woollies Trim and cut it to suit your needs easily enough.

I have always used the chain link mats that LR sold as accessorise . Great in mud and snow as the gaps allow it to drain through, and ones feet are kept off the floor instead of in a pool of water. Just hoses off to clean , or if dry , bang it on a local fence post.

In my case, a previous owner had some sort of hard-wearing fabric glued onto the bulkhead and floors, in addition to a heavy foam-backed (but removable) carpet insulation kit that covered the floor and transmission tunnel.

A few years later, this is what we found underneath all of that carpet:

https://timfoster.smugmug.com/Land-Rover/Bulkhead-Replacement/i-7qHrGkt/A

perhaps it was a coincidence, but I didn't trust that a wet carpet wasn't contributing to that mess.

So, when replacing the bulkhead this time around, I decided that we'd only be using these nice rubber mats:

https://timfoster.smugmug.com/Land-Rover/Bulkhead-Replacement/i-hbxWtt8/A

(though we've still got some fabric covering the seat-box)

The Land Rover seems marginally louder, but there's really not much in it (it's a 200tdi - conversations only happen when necessary) and at least now I can see where water was getting in (since fixed) rather than it being literally brushed under the carpet...

The mats have a nice rubber rim all the way around, along with a cut-out for the full-beams switch, and I'm quite happy with them. https://www.paddockspares.com/pm617-autograph-range-rubber-mats-front-pair.html

Of course, it's also entirely possible that was glued on by whoever sold the car to him, in order to hide older sins...
