Suffix says 2A, but I didn't want to start mooching around in someones carport to have a closer look.
I'll be back there later, but it may be dark by then.

The number plate blanker doesn't work too well on old silver on black plates, does it?

Here's an (old) shot of a couple of my cars (not Landrovers though).

It tickles me on tv programmes when they tape up or obscure manufacturers badges on steering wheels than show an arty external shot with the vehicle and badges plain for all to see.

It’s the date it was built that matters for black and white plates not the date it was registered.
Plus it’s now rolling with the 40 historic tax thing so cars from 1980 can switch to black and white plates.

My 71 K is on original reflective blummels, I think at some point it came down to dealer preference and to some extent trends of the time.

The 1980's stamped/pressed alloy plates had a sligthly squarish font.

I saw a late 80's 110 that had black/white plates and stood out like a saw thumb.  I spoke to the driver and the glint in his eye showed he knew that he should not have them on.  He said they look cool though dont they, no particularly I replied.  Had a nice galv chassis though.

Hi,

I agree with that statement.

In 1971, I bought a brand new Moskvitch van. the cheapest thing on four wheels. A smidgen over £600. I wish I had it now. It would comfortably pull my Sprite Alpine down the M4 at 70mph. Did I read recently, that Moskvitch used a 1600cc BMW engine, or a copy thereof? I think the Neval flat-twin motorcycles were also BMW "inspired".

Whatever, my new van came with B&W plates. Other new cars were driving out of their showrooms with those desirable, (then), colourful plates.

602

PS

Hmmm!  1600cc and 80bhp, a huge alluminiun lump that pulled like a train.

Stamped plates whether black and white or white front yellow rear have the advantage of being robust.

Fleet users like bt used them for instance.

The plates that use individually attached plastic letters (with spider washers as i know them) can crack due to age or a moderate impact.

The front when mounted on the separate number plate mount is especially vulnerable, I moved mine to the radiator grill so that it was more in board away from harm.  Secretly I just like having the option of sitting on the bumper between the wings and it was in the way!

Quite so ...

The Land Rover, being seen as a utility work vehicle were more often than not, fitted with pressed plates. Which as posted ^^^ are less  susceptible to damage.

I did wonder if it varied depending on destination market, but if its uk or home market brochure then that theory is a non starter.
Title: Re: Spotted today.
Post by: diffwhine on March 09, 2020, 02:58:02 PM
As it happens, I think the brochure I looked at is a generic publicity brochure for Land Rover from I think about 1979 / 1980. The image shows a left hand drive, so its possible that its an image of an export model. I work with Land Rovers all over the world and I've never seen the lights this way round, but I'm wondering if its an image from a North American publicity shot. They always have had different lighting regs. from the rest of the planet...

It is because of the American lighting regulations of the late sixties that the indicators go at the bottom (they required a larger diameter lamp). As I understand some of the old hands on the line who were used to the military set up would put the indicators at the top. Look at the 1969 publicity photos for late style 11a's and you will see the same  :stars

Think it’s a reference to the side fixing on the rear flap not being tucked through its little pocket before going into the buckle. Stops it becoming a parachute at “speed”.
Must admit I sometimes do it as above when I’m just quickly putting the flap down to keep rain out when parked so it’s no biggie.

It also looks as though the rope isn't tucked under the securing tabs on the tailgate.

We don't know, of course, if this is temporary while loading etc, and would be properly secured before driving off.

Hey Alec. Yes, that’s the one. Although the last time we were involved with television was at least 7-8years ago, so anything you’re seeing is pretty old. And I’m a bit more grey and tired looking 😂

My elder daughter (11) is a very big fan. She is seriously impressed - you have celebrity status in our house!

Not wanting to be a killjoy but it has been pointed out to me (and after a good think) we perhaps shouldn't be giving any locations away, particularly if parked on someone's drive or outside the house. No problem on the open road, or the M25.

Several forum members have had their vehicles stolen in the recent past.
Our Land Rovers are not taken on impulse. The thieves have done their homework.
No one is saying that they use our forum to pick targets, but lets not give it to them on a plate.

Keep the pictures coming in, they often generate some interesting comment, but lets not give too much away about the location.

Mind how you go.

Apologies all.
It was me who raised the point with Wittsend. It follows a comment made by a close friend of mine who is a senior serving police officer who just who happens to head up a team targeting international vehicle crime. He's considering doing a Series 2 restoration and at my suggestion was looking at the forum. He just said that we should be careful. As he's one of the good guys trying to stop this rubbish happening, so we don't want to unintentionally make it easier for our less than honest brethren. This wasn't aimed at anybody in particular. As Wittsend says - just a reminder to all of us that what gets on this forum can be read by all types.
I thoroughly enjoy this thread and the comments it raises, so keep 'em coming in my view!

I think pictures of them when parked on the public road is one thing, when parked off road on a private drive and posting on a public forum probably does cross a line I wouldn't be happy with if the vehicle was mine.

I spotted a very “patinated “ 109 with side windows and tailgate / cat flap in different colours going up the M74 a few days ago , he was loaded up inside with all sorts of who knows what and easily doing a fair bit over 60mph . I was in my ford ranger towing a trailer with a white van on the back , doing a constant 60 on cruise control and he passed me at a decent lick. Anyone on here ?

What is the current legal position regarding parking partially or wholly on a pavement?
I ask as whilst this is avoiding obstructing busy roads it does obstruct pedestrians and those with prams or wheel chairs as well as those blind or partially sited.
A friend of mine was prosecuted for parking like this (in Wales) some years ago :wooly-jumper

As Wittsend says, it depends where you live.
London it's against local bylaws.
So if its on the pavement a ticket can be issued straight away.
Not sure which other county's also enforce this in Uk.

Everywhere else it needs.
The police to witness you driving onto and getting out of the vehicle, or in and driving off, before they can do anything about it.
As they need to see who drove it on and off the pavement.
In which they mostly don't bother doing anything as they do it themselves most of the time lol.

Anyroad, back to the ‘spotted’ thread.

JF is an old Leicester plate, and I’m sure I’ve seen that 88” somewhere before.🤔

Title: Re: Spotted today.
Post by: Herald1360 on December 26, 2020, 12:24:52 PM
JF may be an old Leicester plate but since it's very unlikely that any A suffix JF plates were issued in 1963 that's either a recent "age related" plate for a '63 vehicle or an older random plate issued after a reg transfer or other problem.
Title: Re: Spotted today.

I think a few councils were using up old non-suffix registrations for a while before changing over, my ‘64 has no suffix.

Looked this up as it's major problem here, not illegal to park on the pavement. But illegal to drive on it. Work that one out.

It's legal to drive on the pavement in the US because there, the pavement is the road and the sidewalk is the pavement. They also sit on their fannies rather than their bums, otherwise it would imply that they were using homeless people as seats.  :stars

Gents, maybe I can offer a bit of advice regarding photos, location and getting cars stolen.

Most cameras today record EXIF data with the photo.  This tells when it was taken, what kind of camera, its settings, and where the picture was taken.  A clever person can use this to his advantage.  For example, try this website and use it to open the photo I'm attaching.  It will show my 2A on Snow Bear Lane.  Spooky, eh?

https://www.pic2map.com/

How to get rid of this EXIF data and preserve your privacy?  There are many ways.  Here's a good tutorial:   https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-ways-to-remove-exif-metadata-from-photos-and-why-you-might-want-to/

Title: Re: Spotted today.
Post by: andrewR on March 10, 2021, 08:47:17 AM
Yep, it's not hard when your jpg includes this information:

Unless you disable it, every image you take and share includes your precise time and GPS location, and often your name as well. So you need to be aware of this when sharing pictures of your vehicle in it's "out of the way" workshop or location that you think is "secret" and "private". Not if you publish that information!

I have wondered before if forum platforms might have a feature that automatically strips personal and location data from images, but most don't. I tried an experiment some time ago on this forum with an image, and also on another non-LR-related forum. Both appeared as the original submitted file with all the EXIF data still included.

So, generally, these days I just use the windows "Snipping tool" to make an entirely new grab of the image from my screen, which just basically saves the raw image. But as Nanuq says there are other ways.

Every day - yet another learning curve... Thanks for pointing this out. I knew that all digital images have data attached, but somehow automatically assumed that this disappeared on a forum upload. Lesson learned - thank you!

Spotted on the LR4X4 Forum (https://forums.lr4x4.com/topic/110160-dare-we-call-this-a-winch/?tab=comments#comment-1007811).
The OP thinks it is a Series II / IIA, and I concur. To my eyes it's also a LHD 88" Station Wagon with a wire spoked steering wheel, and twin wiper motors!

It's the personalised design elements which make it worthy of mention - the electric winch, including the fairlead, the winch drum, and the recovery points.

The two pictures:

The OP on LR4X4 says he is not buying it, but "Feel free to sent me £ 3000 and I'll buy it on your behalf, store it for you here in order to collect it later this year. ".

'Here' is 'Hidden somewhere deep in the dark Auvergne....'.

I don't know how to put pictures on the forum as I'm mechanical and computer technology is way beyond my comprehension. I can email pictures from my phone but only one at a time.
It's no good explaining it as I won't understand. I'm blissful in computer ignorance.

I remember seeing a Land Rover in London on the one way system past Earl's Court to the Embankment. It was a 110 Station Wagon reg 0S 05 LOW parked in the drive of a house.

O So 5low. Good plate!

Saw this very tidy 88" a few days ago.

Very nice. I bet it's called Womble.

Spotted today, in the ‘burbs of Leicester.
DBG 88” ragtop near the racecourse, what stood out were the yellow wheels and the yellow lifting eyes on the bumper.
No pics unfortunately as I was driving.

Whilst the registration matches, several other points don't, it is either a replica displayed with the original number or the original vehicle completely rebuilt and ad the last recorded colour on DVLA was for a blue vehicle in 1992 given the patina I favour the former

I take it that its not owned by a S2C member then?

Probably don't want to dig too deep into its provenance, but its always been one of my favourite LR film vehicles.

Not quite "today", but here's a nice shot of a bunch of us who headed in convoy to the Kilbroney Vintage show in Rostrevor, Northern Ireland last weekend.

There was a pretty good representation of other Series (and not-so-Series) Land Rovers throughout the rest of the show (one of the largest in Europe, by some accounts - capped registration at 1000 vehicles) More photos from the rest of the show at https://photos.smugmug.com/Events/Kilbroney-2022

For me, in Scotland, not just 1 (rare enough), but !2! Series 2's today. Both seen while on a cycle ride. Very different conditions though.

First one (2 images) is a very sad looking ? ex military S2A ? It has an "M" plate but I think it is much older than that. VIN plate says 2411XXXX. MOT database says "Colour Green  Fuel type Diesel Date registered 31 December 1965".  I came across this well off the beaten track. Some usable aluminium parts like seatbox, the tub looks good, and the hard-top is A1. Glazing in windscreen nice. Apart from that it's finished? Diesel engine (seized I suppose). I took some more pictures, so if anyone is really interested I can tell you where it is, and it might be possible to work out who it belongs to.

Second one (third image)  (B reg) is still earning its keep!  :jock

Yup. I met the chap's wife driving that one a year or two back. Apparently he'd very proud of it (rightly).
I wouldn't have posted about that one, but the contrast with the one I found earlier in the day was so great, it seemed worthwhile.
The first one makes me sad :(

Not S2 but I saw a very nice G ** WAC Disco 1 in ( I think ) Sandbach services a few days ago with a car trailer and another vehicle on it. Didn’t take note what the other car was as I was drooling too much over the Diso. It looked either very well preserved or re- furnished. I noticed that the driver and passenger were sitting inside , obviously they weren’t about to leave it unattended.

G...WAC Disco's are sought after and preserved, as they are factory registered launch vehicles.

This FB group are all over them, and other factory vehicles.
