So I am told this weekend is when we all think about booking our holidays and I got to thinking about a chap I met at one of the international events a few years back who was offering Icelandic tours. I can't remember if he was an invited trader, club member or guest. Of course I have lost his details.......So Does anyone know who I am talking about? or has anyone been on any similar self drive / escorted holidays that might be of interest, doesn't have to be Iceland (although I think that's where I am looking at)... where have you lot been driving??

Off-road, explorer type, driving tour..... or road/gravel driving?
If road/gravel then my wife and I have done a couple of solo self-drive tours of Iceland mostly on road but with a lot of miles on the gravel roads, of which there are many. The first one about 10 yrs ago (before it got too touristy). The first trip started at Akureyri in the north and generally followed the East and South coast, ending at Reykjavik. The second, aout 8 yrs ago, started at Reykjavik and followed West and North coasts, ending at Akureyri (then fly back to Keflavik/Reykjavik).
We've been a few more times since but have found it becoming increasingly touristy at the popular spots and the peace/freedom you used to have have been replaced by guard rails, signs, warnings and people taking selfies......I preferred it in the early days. :(

Population density about 1 person/sq. mile!! A breezy place, mind you hold on to your car door handle as you open it, the wind can whip it out of your hand :agh

Last July I did a week-long trip to Albania with my boys (both early twenties). We specifically wanted self-drive; 4 x 4; and as much off-road as possible. Eventually rented a brand new Lada Neva from Drive Albania. They provided a fully kitted out car, insured for all three of us to drive; booked hotels each night; and gave us detailed routes through the mountains for each day.
One of the best things I've ever done - and one of the cheapest. We spent almost all of every day on dirt road - many of them pretty challenging (one day we drove the entire length of a river bed (still active) all the way down to the sea). Everyone we met was super-friendly and the country is super-safe (providing you're a foreigner).
From memory the whole thing cost us £1600 for car hire, itinerary and hotels, with flights, petrol and beer on top.
Ruddy brilliant trip.

I did Iceland last Christmas in a Hyundai i10 never missed a beat some of the worst conditions I have ever seen, did the golden circle thing people rave about

Get in your 2a and go! We had a fantastic time, even though the weather was rubbish when we went :RHD we just booked some ferries and that was it - we never booked any overnight accommodation etc. We laid a map out on the floor in the ferry for some last minute route 'setting' but we already knew most of what we wanted to see. I'd definitely go back as it was a bit rushed (driving there and back took a good few days as well so ate into our time on Iceland).
Funnily enough Albania was looking top destination for our trip this year but we might have other plans now.
