Apologies if this is covered somewhere else on here, I've had a look around and can't seem to find exactly what I'm after.
I'm lucky enough to own a 1961 2a, it is of course, MOT exempt but was supplied with one when I bought it in October last year. Whist I appreciate the value of getting one done irrespective, how does it work if I choose not to? I suspect DVLA records would show it as MOT expired in spite of the fact it doesn't legally have to have one.
Can anyone please offer advice?

Don’t worry about it. It’s exempt.
Keep it roadworthy.

Mine simply shows "no results returned" on the DVLA vehicle check page but the box is green, not red so assume that is okay and they know it's MOT exempt.
My Range Rover however shows the MOT as expired and it's a big red box that shows it expired in August 2018

Don't worry about it.
Worry about taxing your vehicle.
You should get a reminder a few weeks before the due date.
When "renewing the tax" at nil £s you self declare that the vehicle is MoT exempt.
(all assuming the vehicle is registered as a Vehicle of Historic Interest)
The online form is very clear.
That's all you need do.

I've actually just taxed it which made me think of the question! It did state that it was a VHI. Didn't notice anything else needing to be done - I did it online.

You're travelling along the road minding your own business when you meet a jam sandwich[ anpr vehicle as I read on the bonnet], glance in the mirror and see it turn round 1/4 mile behind you. He then pulls you and accuses you of not having an MOT. You agree and explain that as it is over 40 years old it is exempt and not required to have one. One prowls around the vehicle while the other is on the phone in the car and 5 minutes later another car turns up. The now 4 coppers have a big conflab and make more calls. They then root you out of the vehicle, tell you the rear lhs brake light is not working and they are not happy with the bent rear sill panel [bent underneath out of the way!!], tell me to get them sorted and off they go.
I kid you not - this happened last Thursday when I was out in my 2BFC. Think our Derbyshire police are a bit behind the times :stars
ps the tax ends tomorrow and at the time it had already been renewed to Sept '21 and the exempt declaration made.

Plod (affectionate term, coz I'm generally on their side) stops you. The moment he decides to report you for prosecution, he should caution you (Miranda ... as they call it in Yankyland). At that point, you should stop talking. Anything you say may be read out in court ... in a manner that will make you sound stupid.
In all my years, and "stoppings", Plod has only done it correctly once.... but then they have only prosecuted once.
"Good evening!" I said respectfully (as you do)
"Don't you mean Good Morning?* replied Plod, with that tone in his voice.
"Oh, it's like that, is it?"
"Yes! We have followed you for one mile" ... etc. ... Anything you say, etc ....!"
