I think your average 2 1/4 engine will not start on the 1st compression like that one!

My dad has an ancient Hayterette lawn mower that had a wind up starter. It worked really well.
At some point in its past the mechanism wore out and it now has a cord pull starter.
It was quite a novelty and I've not seen anything like it since.

I stuck a V8 in the 110 recently. It's from an '80 rrc, so still has the starter dogs on the crank pulley bolt. It's been built to high compression spec though, I've not had the stones to try and start it on the handle...

I think your average 2 1/4 engine will not start on the 1st compression like that one!

I guess in most practical situations, with an S2 you'd be better off bump starting it. I like the concept though, especially for things like boats as mentioned in the video.

The old Field Marshall tractors used to have a cartridge start, a 12 bore cartridge minus shot inserted in a holder and struck with a mallet. They had one on the farm where my grandad worked. Once started in the morning the engine was never stopped all day.
We used to have and Aveling Barford calf dozer (a mini bulldozer in year sgone by) It had an 800cc single cylinder dorman petrol engine.. Starting procedure was turn on the fuel at the tap under the gravity feed fuel tank, prime the carb (for a cold start also move the choke lever), switch on the ignition, insert the crank handle and make sure it is engaged and then hold down the decompression lever and swing the handle as hard as you can once the engine is turning over at a reasonable speed (so that the magneto can produce a spark) let go of the decompressor and away it would go.
The photo below shows it with the bucket on the front

That is the modern version of the Lucas CAV Spring Starters.
Those would easily start a Land Rover Engine, if it is properly set up.

That is the modern version of the Lucas CAV Spring Starters.
Those would easily start a Land Rover Engine, if it is properly set up.

That's just a packaging problem.
Longer shaft on the handle, fit the spring starter where you can.
They'll start a good condition Land Rover engine. :coffee
